Area teams send strong contingent to TAAF Games of Texas

Published: Thursday, July 24, 2008 5:24 PM CDT
Several local athletes will see months of hard work pay off this weekend as the head to San Antonio for the TAAF Games of Texas.

The Rowlett Speed Racers and Xtreme Speed track and field teams combined to earn 47 individual and 10 relay qualifying berths from the Region VII meet in Frisco on July 11-12. At the meet, the top six finishers in each event qualified for the state competition.

At the regional swimming competition, the Rowlett Riptide has 12 different swimmers qualify for the state meet, marking the most in team history.

The Speed Racers were strongest in the relays, sending eight different teams to San Antonio. Among that group is the Girls 10-and-under 1,600 relay team of Milan Washington, Aliaha Simpson, Raven Powell and Shanice Smith, which took first place.

The lone individual to win a gold medal at the regional meet for the Speed Racers was Daniel Dobson, who won the shot put in the Boys 10-and-under division.

The team also had a pair of second-place finishes, as Michael Simpson was second in the Boys 12-and-under 800 meters and Anisa Lopez was the runner-up in the Girls 8-and-under 800 meters.

Jada Medford-Peck (8-and-under), Milan Washington (10-and-under), Raven Powell (10-and-under), David Washington (8-and-under) and Steven Hykel (16-and-under) all qualified in three events for the Speed Racers.

The Xtreme Speed had just two relay teams make it past regionals, but got several strong individual performances, earning 26 berths, including four first-place finishes at the regional meet.

One of the top overall performances was turned in by Eboni Smith in the Girls 12-and-under division, as she placed first in the 200 meters, second in the 100 and joined Bailey Mosley, Alexis Barnes and Brianna Duplechain on the 400 relay that took second place.

Mosley, Duplechain, Barnes and Tyra Burks teamed to place second in the 1,600 relay, as well.

Ashleigh McKellum won the gold medal at the regional meet in the 200 meters in the Girls 16-and-under division.

In the Boys 16-and-under group, Dylan Pargas won the 3,200 meters and took fifth in the 1,600. Ben Siple was the winner in the 800 meters.
