Holiday parade Saturday

The City of Rowlett will be celebrating the holidays with a parade and activities in downtown Rowlett.

Children's activities and music kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday. Local school choirs will be performing at the Nov. 22 event. The weather forecast for Saturday morning calls for mostly cloudy skies above Rowlett with temperatures going from 45 to 56 degrees after being in the low-70s on Wednesday.

The Christmas tree in Rowlett went up Tuesday at city hall.

Rowlett's "Star-Spangled Christmas" has been designed to honor all of the men and women serving the nation. Activities run until 2 p.m. Saturday.

Santa is expected to be at the parade. Afterward, kids can greet him and take photos at the Chamber of Commerce.

The parade will start at 10 a.m. at Industrial Blvd. and Kirby Road, then go east on Industrial, north on Kirby and west on Main Street to Commerce Street.

The Noon Exchange Club will be selling hot dogs and drinks. The Community Emergency Response Team from Rowlett will be selling candy. The organizers are asking for donations of phone cards in the amount of $20. The phone cards will be sent to soldiers so that they can call home for the holidays.

Firewheel tree lighting

The annual tree lighting ceremony at Firewheel Town Center in Garland will have horse-drawn carriage rides from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Lights on the tree will be turned on at 7 p.m. at 245 Cedar Sage Drive near the end of the turnpike at State Highway 78.


The Hometown Holidays Celebrations will have performances as part of the KLTY Christmas Concert series with music artists Kari Jobe, Nicole Sponberg and Mandisa from American Idol. Metropolitan Winds and the Lakeshore Symphonic Winds Orchestra will be performing.

The holiday events will run every Saturday through Dec. 20.

Gas prices down again

The Circle K, Valero and Exxon on Dalrock Road each saw gas prices dropping to $1.74 on Thursday morning.

A day earlier, the best was by Kroger in Sachse at $1.77 for a gallon of unleaded gas at State Highway 78 and Murphy Road. The high in Sachse was $1.89 at Chevron on Hooper Street.

In Rowlett, gas stations along Lakeview Parkway and Dal Rock Road has gas for $1.79 on Wednesday. Texaco had gas at $1.89 on Lakeview.

Fina and Valero on Northwest Drive had gas for $1.72 on Wednesday. The Quick Stop on North Galloway Ave. was selling a gallon of unleaded gas for $1.73 on Wednesday. Most stations in Mesquite were selling gas for $1.79 or less on Wednesday. A few were hovering above $1.95.

Exxon at S. Goliad close to Washington Street in Rockwall held at $1.99 on Wednesday night.

A week ago, gas prices averaged $1.89 in the area. A month ago, drivers paid $2.67 and last year before Thanksgiving the price was $3.08.

Santa Cop Toy Parade

Almost time to rev up the motorcycles for the 11th annual Mesquite Santa Cop Toy Parade on Dec. 6 at the First Baptist Athletic Complex.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. for the 11 a.m. parade.

The first 300 riders will get event pins. The cost to ride is $10 or bring a new toy.

Riders can also join the Crossroad Riders of Mesquite, which is part of the Christian Motorcyclists Association. The group gathers at the Ryans Steak House on North Galloway Ave. and Tripp Road at 7 p.m. on the last Tuesday of every month.
