Friends of Jorge L. Lopez who was shot to death while sitting in his car on Monday in Garland want to honor him and have set up a memorial fund at Chase Bank in his name.
Friends said Thursday that they will hold a candlelight vigil where he was killed at Jupiter Road and Marquis in Garland on Saturday.
Lopez, 20, was the first victim in Monday's shooting spree that also left a truck driver dead after he was shot on LBJ Freeway by another driver.
Friends said Thursday that Lopez, a longtime resident of Rowlett who attended Rowlett High School, was "loved and admired by many."
His friends say they are at a lost as far as what to do. No one can understand how or why this happened.
His friends have set up several collection cans in Rowlett businesses in addition to opening the memorial account at Chase.
Police are investigating if Lopez was killed by a man who shot two drivers on LBJ Freeway during Monday's rush hour.
Police have a suspect, who is in critical condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Police said former Utah state trooper Brian Smith shot himself when cornered by officers. Smith was wanted on robbery and theft warrants.
Police are investigating whether alcohol and prescription drugs may have been a reason for why Smith started shooting.
Dallas police said that Smith's bullets killed 42-year-old truck driver William Miller on Monday on the freeway.
On Wednesday morning, drivers going northwest on Interstate 635 came to a stop and had to wait before noon as Dallas police officers searched the empty freeway for signs of the crimes. Police shut down all of the westbound lanes and traffic quickly backed up toward Mesquite.
