(Slideshow) Quick tips to make your home energy efficient this summer

By Cameron Leggett, Energy Saving Tips
Keep cool, save money and save energy by trying these solutions at home:
1. Seal air leaks around windows, doors, plumbing and ducting to prevent drafts and air from escaping the home.
2. Add the right amount of insulation to your attic to keep your home cooler in the summer.
4. Replace a manual thermostat with a digital thermostat to program temperatures to adjust to the time of day in your house.
5. Install a lighter color window shade to reflect the sun’s heat from your home and keep the shades closed during the day.
Energy Efficiency Tax Credit: Homeowners can take advantage of a government tax credit of up to $1,500 for home energy efficiency improvements such as attic insulation and a radiant barrier. With the tax credit and rising summer temperatures now is the best time to make your home energy efficient. Adding insulation to the attic is the most cost-effective way to lower energy bills and make a home more comfortable.
The Department of Energy recommends 18 to 22 inches of attic insulation for maximum home energy efficiency. A radiant barrier, a thin coating of highly-reflective aluminum applied to the underside of the roof, can block up to 75 percent of the sun's radiant heat from coming into the home. Proper roof ventilation helps maintain a cooler, dryer attic that prevents mold and mildew.
