Aledo too much for Little Elm

By BLAINE CRIMMINS, Staff writer
Sophomore running back Johnathan Gray ran for 149 yards and scored four touchdowns on Friday night as the Aledo Bearcats defeated the Little Elm Lobos, 41-7, at Northwest ISD Stadium.
In their Class 4A playoff debut, the young Lobos (4-7) were outmatched by the bigger, faster Bearcats (10-1). A fumble recovery by senior Clifton Murphy and an interception by senior DaKari Bracy kept the game close in the first half, but Little Elm could never move the ball effectively, nor could it stop Gray from ultimately finding the end zone.
On the field after the game, Little Elm head coach Donald Stowers said it's always tough to lose but that his team should be proud of its 2009 campaign.
Injuries at the quarterback position created a revolving door behind center much of the night. No less than four different players saw action at quarterback. By the second half, Lobo freshman Devanate Pullum took most of the snaps.
Little Elm's lone touchdown came on a 48-yard breakaway by sophomore DJ Haynes, further highlighting the team's youth. Stowers said he hopes his players work hard in the off-season and learn from the experience of a playoff game against a top-ranked team.
"The good thing about it is that we're setting a precedent for the future, for the years to come," he said. "We've got some youngsters coming back ... and we'll be right back here and be even better (next year)."
Little Elm's running game had been successful much of the regular season but it was a different story against Aledo. The Bearcats' team speed clogged gaps up the middle and cut off runs to the outside.
On offense, Aledo was equally speedy and efficient, utilizing a stable of weapons. Bearcat sophomore quarterback Matthew Bishop threw for 168 yards and a touchdown. Senior Trey Ozee saw time at quarterback, running back, and wide receiver, proving effective at every position. Sophomore receiver Michael Mann caught 7 passes for 90 yards.
The Bearcats marched the ball 93 yards on 10 plays for a touchdown on its first possession of the game. Aledo also scored a touchdown on its opening possession of the third quarter.
"They've been here. They know what it's all about," Stowers said.
Aledo will face Stephenville in the next round of the playoffs.
