Charleston Choose: Chloe makes college selection official

Published: Saturday, November 13, 2010 1:17 AM CST
Followers of Plano Senior softball may not initially recognize the name Chloe Fletcher.

That’s because Fletcher is enjoying her first time at Plano after moving back to Texas over the summer. But the outfielder’s reputation precedes her and such was the case on Wednesday at National Signing Day, as Fletcher will continue a widespread softball career at the College of Charleston.

And the newcomer had more than enough support along the way.

“It’s crazy,” Fletcher said. “I didn’t expect the whole team to be here to support me. It really makes me feel good that they’re here to support me, as well as my dad and some of my other friends. I love this experience; it’s been great.”

While several student-athletes officially inked their collegiate futures on Wednesday, Fletcher had already been a year removed from her decision to play for the Cougars.

Her official commitment came while she was living in Florida; the site of where her post-high school softball aspirations took flight.

Attending Sunlake High School and playing for the club outfit Florida Havoc, Fletcher participated in a number of showcase tournaments along the East Coast from Tennessee to South Carolina.

It was during this run that Charleston piqued her interest.

One e-mail to the program was all it took for the Cougars to oblige. Two trips to the South Carolina-based campus had Fletcher sold on her future, citing the school’s Division I status and the overall vibe of the community as strong bullet points in her decision-making process.

“It’s really pretty and downtown is right in the historic district,” Fletcher said. “There’s a lot of old buildings. It’s on the water and just a really nice place to be. I love the feel of the city.”

It was during the summer prior to her junior year that Fletcher’s recruiting trail picked up steam, with Mississippi College and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College also gaining consideration. With this decision now in her rearview mirror, Fletcher is hoping to make the most out of her first run through the Lady Wildcats’ softball program.

And on the heels of Plano’s run to the Class 5A regional Finals last year, the outfielder is just looking to make an impression.

“I’m new to the program but I think I have a lot to offer,” Fletcher said. “Both with leadership and speed. I just want to help make our softball team even better.”
