Coppell ISD OKs open enrollment
By James Roth, jroth@acnpapers.com
The Coppell ISD School Board recently approved open enrollment that would allow residents in the city of Coppell to enroll in certain schools. The approval will create available seats in areas of the city where student population has been declining.
The board approved in a 4-2 vote, the move to allow open enrollment. However, the process is currently a pilot program and will only be implemented for a few elementary schools in the district where vacancies are evident.
"This has a lot of potential to generate additional revenue for our district," said Tamerah Ringo, director of communications and public relations for the district. "It could work well on campuses in the northern sector of the community where as many as 75 to 100 seats are projected to be available next fall."
"We have seen multiple districts adopt this system and it has been very successful," Ringo said. "We are hoping for the same results."
Open enrollment would allow elementary school students who technically live in the city of Coppell but go to other school districts, such as Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD and Lewisville ISD, to have the freedom to enroll in an open enrollment school.
"Neighborhoods including Coppell Greens and Riverchase will be included and the guidelines for the process are being developed," Ringo said.
This pilot program for open enrollment will go into effect during the 2011-12 school year. Based on the results, the district will decide to continue and expand the project. Ringo said the district has had a lot of discussion on this topic for more than two years, and voting was at a standstill until its most recent meeting.
"It came down to efficiency and revenue. The open enrollment process must be a cost-effective measure for the district in order to garner support beyond the first year of implementation," Ringo said. "This has the potential to really help our district as well as those families in Coppell who want their children to attend our schools. We believe this will be a positive step and we will do everything we can as a district to communicate the information as quickly as possible and help those students acclimate into their new school community."
