Carrollton PD to host junior police academy

In an effort to build positive relationships between the police department and the youth of the city of Carrollton, the Carrollton Police Department will be hosting a Junior Police Academy over the summer to let kids see the life of an everyday police officer.
The Junior Police Academy will allow students in middle school to interact with police officers in a wide range of police activities to see what it takes to become a Carrollton Police Officer.
"Students who are in the academy will learn about the various units within the police department," said Shannon Hartzell, school resource officer. "Our students will get to see the workings of the motorcycle unit, crime scene investigations, SWAT team, hostage negotiation team, police K9 unit and many other exciting areas of the department."
"We don't have any programs in the city for our youth. We thought it would be to let students know what we do," Hartzell said. "Many of them want to be a police officer but do not know what it entails. We want to show them the ins and outs of our job so they can begin to get a sense of what we do every day."
Even though the academy is free for students to attend there are some stipulations for students who want to get involved. Applicants to Junior Police Academy must be incoming 7th or 8th grade students for the 2011-12 school year. In addition, all applicants must be in good standing at their school as well as in the community.
The academy will run in late June and July. There will be four one-week camps that students can attend. Each class runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.
"We are looking forward to students to coming into the building and getting to see what we do first hand every day," Hartzell said.
