Round 2: Bobcats look for another win over PCA

Published: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 9:12 PM CDT
Prestonwood Christian Academy has won back-to-back TAPPS Division I state titles.

However, that didn’t stop the Celina football team from earning a 56-34 win over the Lions last season.

Now the two teams are slated for a second meeting in two seasons, this time at PCA’s home field in Plano, and the Lions will have revenge on their minds.

“They’ll be hard to stop,” said Butch Ford, Celina head coach. “It’ll be a definite challenge for us.”

The Bobcats will also be without game film of Prestonwood’s first game, because the Lions have yet to play a regular season contest.

Meanwhile, Celina hosted Carrollton Ranchview last week and came away with a 49-6 win in front of its home crowd.

“We didn’t play all that great,” Ford said. “It was a typical first-week game with a lot of mistakes and a lot of missed assignments. It’s a lot different than the scrimmages.”

In the game, the Bobcats got off to a slow start, scoring just one touchdown in the opening quarter before allowing a 3-yard touchdown run from Ranchview’s Chris Wimby to start the second frame.

That’s when the Bobcats picked things up though, scoring six straight touchdowns to end the contest with a 43-point victory.

“Defensively, we looked real good at times and we looked bad at times,” Ford said. “There were about seven or eight plays that made us look really bad.”

With the game a lopsided affair in the late going, Ford had the advantage of using multiple players at every position and giving several key players added rest heading into Friday night’s matchup with Prestonwood.

“We were trying to play a lot of kids,” he said. “We didn’t want to wear anybody out in the heat and so we kept making changes throughout the game.”

Perhaps the biggest positive for Celina on the night was the team’s 9.9 yards per carry average, with senior Jamarick Simmons leading all Bobcats with 88 yards on nine carries, including a touchdown run from one yard out.

“Simmons looked good out there,” Ford said. “A lot of that rushing success can be attributed to the play of the offensive line though. The running backs have to block for each other too though.”

The team did have three fumbles, losing just one, and also threw an interception during the game. Ford said the team will have to do a better job of moving the ball Friday if it is to come away from the game with a 2-0 mark.

“It’s going to come down to whatever team doesn’t allow the big plays,” he said. “We’ve got to move the ball on them and I hope we can do a better job of stopping them this time.”

In addition to being back-to-back state champions, the Lions also have 24 seniors back from last season’s title team. Add the fact that Celina will be playing its first road game of the season and Ford has reason to be worried about Friday’s matchup.

“You’d like to play all your games at home,” he said. “It just gets you out of your comfort zone. Hopefully we’ve played enough football that it won’t be much of a factor for us.”

The Bobcats and Lions will kick off the action at 7:30 p.m. from Prestonwood High School.
