Dixon makes another run for council

After a one-year break from serving on the Flower Mound Town Council, Steve Dixon is looking to return.

Dixon filed Thursday to run for Place 4 on the council, a spot occupied by Steve Lyda.

Lyda announced Wednesday his intentions to run for re-election. Also Wednesday, resident Jay Cannon filed to run for Place 4.

Dixon defeated Lyda in the 2009 election for Place 1.

Dixon, who owns an insurance agency specializing in health insurance, said he has several goals he would like to focus on if elected, such as economic development. That includes proactively recruiting top retailers and restaurants.

"The current town council does not have a vision or a plan for economic development," Dixon said. "At a recent council meeting several council members voiced support of buying or farming out economic development activities. The town can get the same information free and the town already has employees that are responsible for many of the same tasks. The town must improve its hard to work with reputation so the exceptional restaurants and stores will stop passing Flower Mound by and opening in surrounding communities."

Dixon said another goal is to expand the anti-drug education programs through partnerships with Lewisville ISD.

"Our children are our treasure and I want the town to put forth an extraordinary effort to work with LISD to educate and inform our kids and parents on the dangers of drugs," Dixon said.

Dixon said he would also like to establish additional recreation opportunities and access to Grapevine Lake so residents can take advantage of the town's natural amenities.

"I think more generationally today than I did when I was younger," Dixon said. "We have a unique opportunity to expand our park amenities near the lake to offer families a way to create memories that will last a lifetime. We can have rental cabins for family camping in Twin Coves. We can have better picnic areas. We can have a better boat ramp and courtesy dock. All this will help families and friends enhance their quality of life in Flower Mound."

He said other initiatives include protecting the town's open space by supporting green community efforts, supporting and maintaining the current oil and gas drilling ordinance and improving Flower Mound's streets in a way that construction coordination minimizes detours and traffic delays.

Dixon said the key to achieving these goals centers around a council that works well together.

"The town council's responsibility is to work together for the good of Flower Mound by representing the citizens through listening and understanding what is important to them," Dixon said. "Several members of the town council are not currently meeting that responsibility. Flower Mound residents and businesses deserve council members who will represent the entire community with common sense, not half-truths, fear and personal agendas."

Dixon served on the council from 2009 to 2011, when he chose not to seek re-election. He was also on the town's planning and zoning commission from 2004 to 2009.

Other involvement includes the SMARTGrowth Commission, the Animal Services Board, the Capital Improvement Advisory Committee and the town's Mixed Use Steering Committee. He has also served in various roles with the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce, such as an executive board member, member of the board of directors and ambassador. He is a Leadership Flower Mound and an Advanced Leadership Flower Mound graduate.
