Summer reading at the Rowlett Public Library

Published: Thursday, May 24, 2012 11:19 AM CDT
Each year the Rowlett Public Library hosts its summer reading club to give kids the chance to get exposed to reading in a fun and semi-competitive atmosphere. The club allows children to read books and earn prizes as they complete certain requirements.

“We are hosting our kickoff at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 4. Radio Disney will be on hand to help us get the reading club started,” said Kathy Lane, library program director.

This year the summer reading club’s theme is “Get a Clue”. Each participant will get a dog on the library window that they can add parts to such as a badge as they complete every five hours of reading.

“At the end of the summer all the windows will be covered with these detective dogs,” Lane said.

The goal is for each child to completely deck out their detective dog with a badge and other items. For every five hours, up to 30, each child receives a prize that ranges from skating or bowling to a circus ticket.

“We really want to get children to read and fall in love with books,” Lane said. “It is very important. Once the children see how exciting a good book can be they will want to read more books and reading is learning.”

The library will continue to offer its Monday, Wednesday and Friday story times during the summer as well.

To help add to the fun atmosphere the library will host movies in the library on Thursday at 2 p.m. during June and July. In addition to the movies, each Tuesday there will be a guest performer at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Rowlett Community Centre.

The performance schedule kicks on June 5 with yoyo award of excellence winner Valerie Oliver, who will teach the children the art of yoyo and show off some of her tricks. The next performance will be on June 12 as Brett Roberts Magic School will introduce children to the world of magic. On June 19, "Bongo Rod" Butler, host of “The Coconut Hut Radio Show,” will show off some of the puppets he has made out of regular things to the children. One of the club’s favorite performers, Mikey the Monkey, will entertain the children on June 26.

The entertainment does not end with the changing of the month as The Creature Teacher will bring a collection on exotic animals to the community center on July 3. On July 10, Zooniversity will take over the reading club as even more exotic animals will be showcases to the children. David Chicken will bring his trick Chihuahua to reading club participants on July 17.The entertainment schedule will end on July 24 with percussionist Mark Shelton, who will entertain the children with some unique sounds.

“We really try to have something every day for the kids to keep them involved,” Lane said. “The children tend to love animals so this year we tried t get as many as possible. A lot of the performers will discuss how reading has gotten them to where they are today.”
