Hedrick Middle School makes learning relevant, engaging

Hedrick Middle School (HMS) sixth- through eighth-grade ESL (English as a Second Language) students in David Corliss' class a Hedrick Middle School aren't learning vocabulary by copying definitions from the dictionary. During the class, which integrates several subject matters, students' winning instincts are kicking in as they actively use their English skills in all four areas of communication (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in a race to identify words and answer questions. Math was even integrated in to the lesson.
"The objective of the lesson was for my students to gain confidence in communicating with each other in English and reinforce the vocabulary we are studying," Corliss said. "I wanted to create a real opportunity for them practice."
In one activity, students worked with a partner to investigate and answer questions. For example, students determined the length of some classroom items and then wrote a description of their findings. In another activity, students are engaged as they display their knowledge and comprehension to identify the correct vocabulary before their opponent.
