Clifton E. Dowell, Jr., was born in McKinney, Texas on December 12, 1932, and passed away on September 22, 2012 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his wife, Lurline M. Dowell; his brothers Reverend Charles Pat Dowell (Carolyn Dowell) and Reverend Edward Dowell (Cindy Dowell); sons Dr. Mark Dowell and Dr. David Dowell(Dr. Athena Daniolos); grandchildren Marquette and Garrett Dowell (Mark), James and Jonathan Dowell (David), Diana and Brandon Maciag , and Christopher Mills (Dennis Maciag). He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton E. Dowell, Sr. and Tina Mae Milligan.
Cliff was the son of a family hardware owner in McKinney. He attended Texas Christian University and received his doctorate in microbiology from the University of Texas. He married Maurine (Dowell) Ingraham and brought the boys Mark and David to professorial stops at Cal-Tech, Tulane, Cal-Davis before settling at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst where he taught undergraduates and graduate students for three decades. Cliff’s research spanned many areas, focusing on the DNA of viruses that infect bacteria. He married Lurline Mitchell in 1981. After his retirement from the University, he worked with Promega in Madison to produce viruses that could test for safety of products to protect from HIV.Cliff had a warm and kind nature, a keen sense of humor, and could not bring himself to utter a mean word. He enjoyed playing tennis, and brandished a wicked forehand. Cliff was a fine father, husband, scientist and friend. We will miss him greatly.
