Former Frisco man sentenced to 62 years in prison on sexual assault conviction (updated)

A former Frisco resident was sentenced on a charge of aggravated sexual assault Tuesday.

Michael Dangelo Mason, 23, was sentenced to 62 years in prison for a Feb. 12, 2010, incident in north Plano. Prosecutors say Mason raped his 62-year-old former neighbor after requesting entry into her house at about 11 p.m. that day.

Mason told the woman he needed to use her phone and restroom because his car had broken down, prosecutors said. After that, he "approached her from behind, grabbed her around the neck and held a knife to her throat," according to a statement from the Collin County District Attorney's Office.

The two then proceeded to the woman's bedroom, where prosecutors say Mason raped her at knifepoint.

After the incident, Plano police say Mason took the woman's purse and used her credit card for several days. The unauthorized credit card charges led the Plano Police Department to arrest Mason on Feb. 16, 2010, after Mason's cell phone was tracked by Detective Beth Chaney.

Mason has been held at the Collin County Jail since his arrest.

Blake Glover, one of the prosecutors in the case, said Mason received an appropriate sentence.

"We were very satisfied with the outcome -- cases involving violent offenders are always going to be a priority to District Attorney [Greg] Willis," he said. "This case in particular was one of the worst from a factual standpoint that I've ever tried. You had a guy that preyed on an elderly woman and committed a violent rape against her. He needed to go away for a very long time, and we're thankful that's what happened."

J. Matthew Goellar, Mason's attorney, declined to comment on the outcome of the case, but said an appeal is likely to follow. Goellar, who was appointed to represent Mason by State District Court Judge Angela Tucker, said he may or may not continue to represent Mason during such an appeal.

Mason will be eligible for parole in 30 years. He is still awaiting trial on three other charges: two charges of aggravated sexual assault and a charge of aggravated robbery.
