In what was a defensive battle for one half, Mesquite turned to its explosiveness to make sure it remained undefeated.
The Skeeters scored three touchdowns of 60 yards or more in the final two quarters to pull away for a 35-14 victory over Rockwall-Heath on Friday at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
Mesquite moves to 6-0 overall and its 2-0 record in 12-5A puts it in a tie for first place in district play with Horn. The Hawks fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in district.
The teams were locked in a scoreless tie for much of the first half until Alex Cooper finally broke the stalemate with a 4-yard quarterback keeper for a score to take a 7-0 lead with just 13 seconds left before halftime.
The fireworks started early in the second half, as Jordan Bracy returned the third-quarter kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown that pushed the advantage to 14-0.
The Hawks had been shut down to that point, but finally got on the scoreboard on a short touchdown run by Alex Solis to cut the deficit in half at 14-7, but Mesquite had an immediate answer.
Two of them, in fact.
Cooper scored from four yards out to extend the lead back to two scores and Tyson Reed broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run that made it 28-7.
Rockwall-Heath hung around with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Chase Schultz to Shyon Motlagh late in the third quarter.
But Cooper provided the knockout blow early in the fourth when he busted a 70-yard touchdown run that made it 35-14 and that score would hold up until the end.
