Marking the 75th anniversary of the classic MGM movie, this 1900 children's fantasy by L. Frank Baum is retold on the stage in a production by the Royal Shakespeare Company which resembles the movie as closely as possible.

The genuine, family classic musical tells the tale of Dorothy Gale, an orphan, unhappy with her drab existence on a dusty Kansas farm. She yearns to travel "Over the Rainbow" and gets her wish when a tornado whisks her and her little dog, Toto, to the colorful land of Oz. After offending the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy is protected by the ruby slippers she wears thanks to Glinda the Good Witch of the North who tells her to "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" to the Emerald City, home of the all-powerful Wizard of Oz, who might be able to help the girl return to Kansas since learning, "There is no place like home." On the way, she befriends a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion who hope the Wizard can help them gain a heart, a brain and courage.

Symphony releases schedule

The Lewisville Lake Symphony has announced its 2012-13 symphony series schedule, with four programs being held in the performance hall at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater.

Mahler's Symphony No. 4 will be presented Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. This rarely heard chamber piece is often called "The Secret Symphony" because it was intended only for the ears of a secretive, elite society in war-torn Vienna. It was lost for more than 25 years, smuggled out of Nazi Germany, touched by scandal and murder in English, and hunted by an American.

On Friday, Feb. 22, the symphony will showcase outstanding young talent with music selected by the grand prize winner of the Vernell Gregg Young Artists' Competition, in addition to Mozart's La Clemenza de Tito Overture and Haydn's "Clock." There will be one performance starting at 7:30 p.m.

The season will conclude with performances Friday, April 19 and Sunday, April 21. The program will include selections from Elgar and Shubert, featuring violinist Shannon Lee. The Canadian-born musician made a stunning orchestral debut in 2005 with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra when she was just 12 years old, and later performed as a featured soloist during the DSO's Texas Tour. She has performed extensively both in the United States and Europe, and currently is a junior at Columbia University. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Individual show tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors on Friday nights; $20 for adults and $15 for seniors on Sunday afternoons; $10 for students at all shows; and $10 at all shows for active duty military personnel returning from combat deployment, along with their families. Season tickets also are available. To order tickets visit www.LewisvilleSymphony.tix.com.

Now in its 29th season, the Lewisville Lake Symphony has been recognized by the Texas Senate as one of the most respected, all-professional regional orchestras in the Lone Star State It is one of six local groups receiving funding during 2012-13 from the city of Lewisville arts support grant program designed to foster cultural and fine arts in the community.
