Dallas symphony launches first on the go tour

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is taking its concert on tour in order to reach more communities and share its music.
The DSO's inaugural season of the concert series DSO on the GO, presented by The Ebby Halliday Companies will begin at 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at the University of North Texas' Murchison Performing Arts Center, 2100 Interstate 35E frontage road in Denton. To purchase tickets visit http://music.unt.edu/mpac or call 940-369-7802.
"The orchestra realizes that though the Meyerson is one of the premier concert halls in the world, we know that not everyone can come to downtown Dallas to each of our concerts," said Chris Shull, manager of publications and public relations for the DSO. "We decided that we could reach an expanded audience and share the music by taking the orchestra to different communities. We want to bring our great music-making out to these communities. We feel we're an orchestra for the entire community."
Shull said attendees should expect a "real" DSO concert. He said the orchestra will play classical music just like they would at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
The DSO on the GO will include 17 performances featuring the most familiar classical pieces and popular light classics, with concerto soloists who are principal musicians in the DSO. The program includes: Berlioz's "Roman Carnival Overture," Saint Saens' "Cello Concerto No. 1" and Dvorak's "Symphony No. 9 From the New World."
"We already had a soft opening of this series, and about 1,000 people attended the concerts," Shull said. "We think the season will expand to more communities. Everyone really enjoyed the experience, and I think people were very appreciative. We want to promote great orchestra music."
Shull said the symphony chose the concert's music selection because they wanted to feature their own musicians in solo roles. Tim Demer will play old time fiddle features in Southlake, and violinist Angela Fuller will also be featured.
The Denton concert will feature DSO principal cellist and UNT alumnus Christopher Adkins. He is a native of Denton and has degrees from UNT and Yale University. Adkins joined the Dallas Symphony in 1987. Adkins also studied with former Dallas Symphony principal cellist Lev Aronson. In addition, Adkins is a member of the Dallas String Quartet and has performed with the ensemble throughout the U.S. and Europe.
"We wanted serious music but also music that is popular and a little bit more familiar," Shull said. "That's why we chose a piece in 'From the New World.' Audiences everywhere can relate to the piece because it is American experiences translated into music."
Ticket prices for the series start at $10 for some venues. The median price for tickets is $20. Shull said the symphony feels the prices are affordable for families. Concerts should last about two hours.
The majority of the DSO on the Go concerts will be conducted by Alasdair Neale. He is the music director of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, the Marin Symphony and a principal guest conductor of The San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Neale is also a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, Saint Louis Symphony, Houston Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Honolulu Symphony, Seattle Symphony and the Florida Orchestra.
The 96-member DSO began its season Sept. 8 and continues through June. Shull said the orchestra hopes that the DSO on the Go will remind people about concerts going on at the Meyerson.
The DSO's maestro for the majority of concerts at the Meyerson is Jaap van Zweden, maestro. At 19 years old, he was appointed as the youngest concertmaster ever of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
"He has the orchestra playing at a level unprecedented in Dallas. They (musicians) all say he brings such a level of understanding of the music being played. He brings this wealth of knowledge and sympathy with the players, and then he works to make exceptional performances," Shull said. "When he's not on the podium, they're still playing at those levels."
