Wolves go on DI visits

While the Plano West football team was off last week, their players were far from inactive as seniors Jake Wodka, Parker Murry and Austin Copeland visited Division I schools.

Wodka, a middle linebacker, went to Fort Worth as TCU hosted Iowa State.

Joining Wodka on a Big 12 campus was Copeland. The speedy receiver was in Lubbock as Texas Tech hosted Oklahoma. Murry traveled a bit further away as the center was in Colorado Springs when the Air Force Academy welcomed Navy.

Free Throws for Freedom

The Plano Senior boys basketball team is giving back to help one of its own.

Plano alum Eric Zastoupil was injured in Afghanistan while serving with the U.S. Army after stepping on an IED. As a result, the former Wildcat had to have his left leg amputated below the knee. Paying tribute to Zastoupil, the Wildcats are conducting a free throw challenge fundraiser for the 2012-13 season entitled Free Throws for Freedom.

Slated for Oct. 23, the challenge requires each player to attempt 100 free throws during practice, with a fundraising goal of $100 per player. Donations may be pledged through funds per free throw made or a flat, one-time contribution.

Funds will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project in Zastoupil's name.

Peprah works out for Cowboys

With the Dallas Cowboys a bit thin in the secondary, Plano East alum Charlie Peprah was one of 16 players worked out Friday by the team.

A six-year NFL veteran, Peprah's career spans five years with the Green Bay Packers and one with the Atlanta Falcons. During his stay in Green Bay, Peprah totaled 136 tackles, seven interceptions and one defensive touchdown. The former Panther started for the Packers' Super Bowl-winning secondary in 2010.

His numbers improved in 2011, but the safety was released from Green Bay on the first day of camp this season after failing his physical.

Acosta makes U18 National

FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta, a Plano resident, was one of 20 players chosen Wednesday to represent the U.S. U18 Men's National Team.

The squad is coached by Javier Perez.

Acosta departed Thursday for an 11-day training camp in Mill, Netherlands. The camp will run through Sept. 17 and include an international friendly Tuesday against the Netherlands U18 squad. The U.S. will also play friendly matches against U18 club teams representing Feyenoord Rotterdam, Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge.

A former member of the U15 and U17 National Teams, Acosta most recently appeared in the Lisbon International Tournament under Perez.

Burkhead up for national award

Seven months ago, Nebraska senior Rex Burkhead won the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award for his work with 6 year old Jack Hoffman.

Now, the Plano Senior alum has been named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

"These players have demonstrated the unique ability to balance academics with athletics while donating their limited free time to serve others," said Kathy Mabe, Allstate West region president.

Burkhead has been mentoring Hoffman, who has a brain tumor, by meeting with him 3-4 times a week. The running back hosted a lunch and led a tour of Memorial Stadium for Hoffman's family.

Burkhead also appears on an anti-bullying public service announcement and is a huddle leader for the Nebraska Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The former Wildcat was one of 11 Division I players selected for the team.

Fans can vote for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain at: ESPN.com. The team will be invited to New Orleans for a youth football clinic leading up to the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Morgan commits to Ole Miss

Just a few days after announcing he had de-committed from playing football for Florida State, Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Christian Morgan announced his commitment to Ole Miss.

The Lions' tight end, ranked No. 15 in the nation at his position according to Rivals, announced his decision Sunday via Twitter.

"I have decided to commit to THE University of Mississippi!" Morgan tweeted. "It has been a long journey but God has guided me the whole way. #RebelNation"

Morgan had previously committed to Florida State in June. At the time, Ole Miss was one of his four finalists. Despite announcing his commitment to play for the Seminoles then, Morgan still made the recruiting rounds, including a trip to Oxford, Miss.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior currently leads the Lions in receptions (15), receiving yards (199) and receiving touchdowns (4).
