Sunnyvale drops second straight with loss to Commerce
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
The celebrations and good times that Sunnyvale enjoyed during its five-game winning streak to start the season are starting to seem like a distant memory.
The Raiders dropped their second consecutive game on Friday with a 28-10 loss to Commerce that dropped them to 1-2 in 6-2A play.
It was not hard to see what was Sunnyvale’s Achilles’ heel, as the Raiders turned the ball over seven times in the loss.
The Tigers jumped ahead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Sam Wells to D’Lance Sharp and pushed the advantage to 14-0 on a touchdown run from Robert Jackson.
With the Raiders still stumbling offensively, Commerce stretched the lead to 20-0 at halftime after a touchdown pass from Wells to Kalyn Smith.
Sunnyvale finally started to get going in the third quarter, but had to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Casey Crenshaw.
The Tigers widened the gap to 28-3 on a scoring run by Brian Kelley, and while the Raiders showed no quit in getting back to within 28-10 on a touchdown pass from Ryan Cottingame to Josh Quinn, they would get no closer.
