Three-headed monster: Ground game propels The Colony to win over Heritage

Published: Friday, October 12, 2012 11:49 PM CDT
FRISCO -- The Colony made no secret of their intentions on offense during Friday night's game against Frisco Heritage.

The Cougars used their run-dominated offense to torch the Coyotes on defense and ultimately earn a 49-28 victory from Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium.

"We have three running backs that we love," said Rudy Rangel, The Colony head coach. "They had a great night tonight."

The Cougars were led by juniors Bryan Hammond and Mahlieke Boseman, who contributed to the bulk of The Colony's 522 yards on the ground.

Hammond finished with a game-high 234 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries while Boseman added another 149 yards and two scores on 19 attempts.

"Those running backs ran extremely hard and [The Colony's] offensive line blocked extremely hard," said Che Hendrix, Heritage head coach.

Heritage got on the scoreboard first after The Colony coughed the ball up on its opening drive.

Sophomore quarterback Twayne Blackwell capped off the 28-yard drive with a 15-yard scamper to the end zone that gave the Coyotes a 6-0 lead after a blocked extra point.

"[Blackwell] made plays with his arm and with his feet," Hendrix said.

The Heritage lead didn't last long though, as the Cougars responded with a 77-yard drive that took nearly six minutes off the clock and ended in a 6-yard touchdown run from Hammond.

The score put the Cougars ahead 7-6 with 3:00 left in the opening quarter.

Heritage couldn't answer back after junior running back Sean Jones fumbled on the team's first play of the ensuing drive after grabbing a 13-yard reception from Blackwell.

The Colony capitalized on the shortened field and marched 36 yards to the end zone after a 10-yard touchdown run from Hammond.

"Hammond is our hammer, [Boseman] is our speed guy and [Alec Gibbons] is just a freshman," Rangel said. "[Gibbons] will be a special running back in the future."

Hammond's second touchdown gave the Cougars a 14-6 advantage after the opening quarter.

The Coyotes wasted no time finding the end zone in the second frame though, with Blackwell hitting senior tight end Tyler Stuhan for a 10-yard touchdown pass after eluding several defenders.

"[Blackwell] is incredible," Rangel said. "He had a great game. Hats off to him."

The sophomore quarterback added a 2-point conversion to knot the game at 14-14 with 11:23 left in the half. However, the Heritage defense had a difficult time with Hammond for much of the night.

The junior running back broke free for a 75-yard scoring run on the first play of The Colony's next drive to put his team back in the lead, 21-14.

It was then Blackwell's turn to answer and the sophomore did exactly that, topping Hammond with a 77-yard touchdown run up the middle of the field to even it back up with 9:39 left in the half.

"It wasn't the best night for our defense," Rangel said. "We will have to go back to the drawing board and fix some things on that side of the ball."

Boseman had his turn on The Colony's ensuing possession and scored the first of two touchdowns on the night after punching it in from a yard away with 6:36 left in the second quarter.

With both defenses have trouble stopping the opposing offense, The Colony got exactly what they needed by forcing a Heritage punt minutes later.

The Cougars made the most of the opportunity and took a two-touchdown lead on a 3-yard touchdown run from Gibbons with 1:56 left in the half.

"We had no answer for them up front," Hendrix said. "They man-handled us up front and we just couldn't stop them."

The two teams would enter the break with The Colony leading 35-21 after another punt from the Coyotes with seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Blackwell brought his team back within a possession by breaking free on a 15-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left in the third. The sophomore ended his night with 166 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries while adding another 133 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions through the air after completing 13-of-22 pass attempts.

"This was definitely the best our offense has looked this season," Hendrix said.

Blackwell's 15-yard touchdown would be the final Heritage score of the game though, as The Colony pulled away in the final 13-plus minutes.

A 22-yard touchdown run from senior fullback Trevor Briggs with just 1:09 left in the third gave the Cougars a 42-28 lead.

Boseman then put the game away with another 1-yard touchdown at the 7:11 mark of the fourth to give The Colony a 49-28 advantage.

"When it was time to step up, we stepped up," Rangel said.

The 49-28 victory improved The Colony to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in district play with a Friday matchup against Prosper next in line.

"We're going to play one play at a time," Rangel said. "That's the only way to do it."

Meanwhile, the Coyotes fell to 1-5 with the loss and 0-3 against 9-4A counterparts.

"Every game for us is a must-win if we want to stay alive in this district," Hendrix said.

Heritage will look for its first win over a district foe Friday night when the Coyotes travel to Little Elm for a 7 p.m. kick off.

"We're focused on getting better and competing and hopefully staying in ball games," Hendrix said.
