Saturday to be busy day in city of Coppell

Published: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 4:35 PM CDT
Coppell area residents will have plenty of activities to participate in Saturday.

Keep Coppell Beautiful will host the annual wildflower seeding event, beginning at 9 a.m. at Moore Road Park. Food Day for kids will be observed throughout the morning at the Coppell Farmers Market, and the annual Oak Fest is scheduled for the afternoon at Andy Brown Park East.

At Moore Road Park, the public is invited to help spread seeds along the trail from the north side of Moore Road Park to Andy Brown Park East. There is no cost to participate, and pre-registration is not required.

Representatives of the Trinity Trails System, which is a part of the Texas Trails Network, encourages communities to plant sections of their trail corridors to reflect open prairies that were once a vital part of North Central Texas.

“The seeding event on Saturday will produce beautiful blooms in the spring that are reminiscent of the flowers once prevalent in the Coppell area,” according to a spokesperson for Keep Coppell Beautiful.

For the second year in a row, the Coppell Farmers Market will be observing Food Day, as will many other farmers markets across the nation. This year, the focus will be on the youth of the area.

“This will be the second year the Coppell Farmers Market has joined with others in a celebration of healthy, affordable and sustainable food by targeting this year's Food Day for Kids,” said Amanda Vanhoozier, community programs supervisor. “More than 400 kids came out to the market last year, and there will be even more activities for the kids this year.”

The DFW Truck Farm, a vegetable garden planted in the bed of a pickup truck, will be present at the event.

“This is a powerful message of fresh, local and real food,” Vanhoozier said. “Two dedicated garden and food advocates, Donelle and Marilyn Simmons of Garden Inspirations, will bring the farm-on-wheels to educate and encourage the youth to grow and eat nutritious food with an ongoing activity that will feature plenty of fresh basil.”

To continue the theme of encouraging kids to learn to cook and eat whole foods, Victoria Hooker of Two Chefs' salsa booth will have a booth set up for kids on “eating from the rainbow.”

“With all the encouragement to eat real food, the Coppell Farmers Market is the place to buy it locally,” Vanhoozier said. “There will also be kid-size portions for sale at several of the booths throughout the market.

“Food Day aims to encourage awareness and action leading to a system of healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way,” she said. “By having this event, the Coppell Farmers Market is working with people around the country to create thousands of events in homes, schools, charges farmers markets, city halls and state capitals.

The biggest event of the day in Coppell will be the annual Oak Fest at Andy Brown Park East.

The event, hosted by the Coppell Parks and Recreation Department, is scheduled for 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the park, located at 200 E. Parkway Blvd.

This year's performing artists will include Maiden Texas and Emerald City. Entertainment will also be provided by The Side Street Circus and Professor Brainius.

The event will feature miniature train rides, face painting, live bands, bounce houses and more.

A new feature this year will be the Run Oak Fest. The Haunted Mile will be hosted by the Coppell Chamber of Commerce. A costume contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Food which will be available for purchase will include barbecue sandwiches, turkey legs, funnel cakes, hot dogs and hamburgers.

Those attending are also invited to bring a picnic. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed in the park.

Limited parking will be available at Andy Brown Park East and at the Coppell Aquatic and Recreation Center. Additional parking will be available at Town Center and at Andy Brown Community Parks Central and West. The event is free to the public.
