FOOTBALL STANDINGS: 12-5A, 11-5A, 10-4A
12-5A: Skeeters take control of district race
Quick look: Mesquite took firm control of the district race with its 56-41 win over Horn last week. The Skeeters are 3-0, but most impressive in that start is those three victories have come against the other preseason favorites in Longview, Horn and Rockwall-Heath.
Mesquite can ill-afford to have a letdown on Friday, though, as crosstown rival North Mesquite will be revved up with its Homecoming game as it hopes to shake off a loss to Rockwall.
And although it is still early, the loser of Friday's game between Rockwall and Tyler Lee could essentially be eliminated from playoff contention barring a major late-season turnaround.

11-5A: Sachse, Garland meet with plenty on the line
Quick look: As the district approaches its midpoint, there is a surprise name atop the standings as South Garland improved to 3-0 with its win over Lakeview last week.
While the toughest portion of the schedule still lies ahead, the Colonels have certainly proven themselves capable of taking care of business, which is why they lead Garland (2-0), who had a bye last week, by half-game for first place.
Sachse shook off its upset loss to Lakeview by using a late score to down Rowlett and improve to 2-1 and put itself in sole possession of third place. The Mustangs have one of their biggest district games in school history when it faces off with Garland on Friday at Williams Stadium with a chance to vault to the front of the 11-5A title race.
Rowlett might be the best 1-5 team in the area, but that does not make them feel any better about the 0-2 start in district. While there are plenty of winnable games down the stretch, the Eagles could take a huge step back into the playoff conversation if they could knock off South Garland on Thursday.
The final game is a battle of upstarts as Naaman Forest, which vaulted into fourth place at 1-1 with its win over North Garland last week, takes on Lakeview, which is 1-2 and trying to hang around in search of its first playoff berth since 1995.

10-4A: Undefeated West Mesquite, Highland Park prepare for showdown
Quick look: Through three games, the district standings look about as expected, with the trio of favorites taking the top spots.
Coming off its victory over North Forney, West Mesquite is 3-0 and tied for first place with Highland Park, which used a miraculous finish to edge Poteet a week ago. The Pirates are in sole possession of third place at 2-1 followed by a four-team logjam at 1-2.
The top spot in 10-4A will be on the line on Friday when the Wranglers and Scots meet at Highlander Stadium while the Pirates will try to avoid falling back into the pack when they take on Carrollton Creekview on Thursday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
The team to watch right now might be Forney. The Jackrabbits lost their first two district games, but thumped Creekview in a 44-21 win last week and have a good chance to move to 2-2 win a home game against winless Terrell.
