Playoff football usually brings a slate of new opponents.

For Plano West, which is making its first postseason appearance since 2009, the bi-district round will bring a familiar foe as the team draws Lake Highlands at 7:30 p.m. Friday from Coppell.

Rebel Hell: Dragons run through Richland; win 63-7

Published: Saturday, October 13, 2012 2:17 AM CDT
SOUTHLAKE--The Southlake Carroll football team (5-1, 3-0 in district 4-5A) continued its pursuit of a District 4-5A Title with another lopsided home performance against Richland (2-4, 0-3 in district 4-5A), claiming a 63-7 victory Friday.

Carroll head coach Hal Wasson did not need to motivate his team after going down by 7 inside the first three minutes of the first quarter, but instead chose to rely on his playmakers on offense to get his team the lead.

"The game's not about one play or one series," he said. "It's about a combination of things and how we chose to respond."

After a quarterback sneak by junior quarterback Brandon Maine gave the Rebels a 7-0 advantage, the Dragons rose to stop any attempt of an upset on Homecoming night with a first-quarter performance that left the opponents in shock.

Senior quarterback and Texas A&M commit Kenny Hill took over for Carroll on its first drive, moving the ball 94 yards in six plays and evened the score at 7-7 on a 15-yard scramble to the left side of his line, outrunning several Rebels defenders to the corner.

"He's an amazing player," said Tanner Jacobson, senior defensive back. "Sometimes I like to sit back and watch Kenny work. He's definitely a guy who you like to play with, not against."

A three-and-out by the Richland offense on its following drive gave Hill and the offense an early chance to gain the lead and the chance was quickly cashed in on. Hill would add another rushing touchdown, following a 47-yard pass to senior receiver Mike Gardiner that brought the Dragons down to the 5-yard line, as Carroll went in front, 14-7.

The Dragons offense did not let up in the first quarter, gaining 147 yards on the ground in eight attempts and 273 yards total.

Hill kept the pressure on, scoring on rushing touchdowns of 36 and 48 yards to give the Dragons a 28-7 lead before the first 11 minutes had ended. The quarterback completed 8-of-12 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns to go along with his four rushing scores and 127 yards on the ground in the first half alone.

"Once I got past the lines it was just an open field," Hill said. "My receivers got good blocks and sprung me for those long touchdowns."

The offensive explosion in the first half resulted in a 49-7 Dragons lead, as they outgained Richland, 419-185, in total yards, including 182 on the ground for Carroll.

Most of the first team was replaced midway through the third quarter as sophomore quarterback and receiver Ryan Agnew took the reins from Hill but did not stop the attack.

Agnew finished the Dragons' night with two more touchdowns, one apiece on the ground and through the air, to go with his 144 total yards.

The sophomore's scores finalized the game's total, as the Dragons remained undefeated in district play.

"We knew we had to come out and have a big game just for momentum's sake," Hill said. "We'll come back and prepare hard again [for next week]."

Carroll will battle for sole possession of the district lead Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it takes on Justin Northwest.
