Studying Abroad: Wolves finish regular season strong in Arkansas meet

Published: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 2:53 PM CDT
When cross country runners descend on Myers Park in McKinney Oct. 25 for the District 10-5A Meet, Plano West will be the on-paper favorite in both the boys and girls runs.

But before the Wolves begin the first leg of their postseason, the team ventured out of state Saturday to compete in the Arkansas Chili Pepper Cross Country Festival.

Running from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, West made good on its regular-season finale with the boys and girls finishing third and fourth, respectively. The West boys tallied 135 points overall, while the Lady Wolves posted 189. All schools were playing catch-up to Southlake Carroll, which earned a lopsided sweep in both races.

The Wolves got their licks in though, breaking one runner into the top 10 in Grant Copeland, who placed eighth in the 5,000-meter run with a 15:50.40. Drew Megura followed with a 21st-place run of 16:21.30 while Walter Edstrom claimed 25th at 16:26.70 and Luis Cuenca took 37th with a 16:34.90.

West was among 64 teams and nearly 500 runners on hand for the meet.

The Lady Wolves were tasked with facing 53 other schools and just over 400 opponents, but weren't far off their male counterparts' mark, falling a mere six points shy of placing third. In posting fourth, West was led by Valerie Bradley, who ran a 19:16.70 for 17th place. Ari Surles chipped in a 20:02.90 for 38th, narrowly edging teammate Savannah Borgsmiller in 39th at 20:03.00.

West wasn't the only squad enjoying a final dress rehearsal before district as Plano East took to the course at Acadia Park in Fort Worth for the Keller Central Charger Challenge.

With just the East boys on hand, the Panthers mustered some late momentum of their own, entering the district meet by placing first with 33 points.

At the top of that ledger was Kevin Rojas, who won the 5K competition by running a 16:09.50, nearly nine seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Rojas was one of four Panthers to break the race's top 10, with Jack Meeks adding sixth at 16:41.31, Nick Horton in eighth at 17:04.18 and Sam Reyes in 10th at 17:07.94.

Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers were at Samuell Farm in Mesquite for the Poteet Run the Farm Invitational, which was the most-attended Metroplex meet of the weekend.

Finishing eighth overall with 180 points, East's efforts were led by Mona Azzo, who ran a 21:01.59 to finish 26th. Six seconds behind, in 27th, was teammate Kelsee Wilding while Coral Bunch posted 41st place at 21:51.72 and Maggie Crossland notched 48th with a 22:06.44.
