With a playoff berth on the line, Rowlett and Lakeview traded scores for much of four quarters.

But the Eagles got a touchdown run from Carson Hyles with less than three minutes left in regulation and the Patriots finally did not have an answer as Rowlett hung on for a 36-29 victory on Friday at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

The Eagles (4-6 overall, 3-3 in 11-5A) live to fight another day where they will face Longview (7-3, 4-2), the third-place team from 12-5A, in a Class 5A Division II bi-district playoff game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Kincaide Stadium.

Rowlett did not expect it to be easy against a Lakeview team that was fighting for its first playoff berth since 1995 and it was not.

The Eagles opened the scoring on an 8-yard touchdown run from Nigel Hasty in the first quarter and Jamal Smith followed with a two-point conversion, but as would become a recurring theme, the Patriots answered when Brent Davenport threw a scoring strike to Jarvis Baxter to make it 8-7.

Hasty again gave Rowlett the lead when he scored from three yards out, but a 22-yard field goal by Daniel Komayombi on the final play of the second quarter drew Lakeview to within 15-10 at halftime.

It was the Patriots that struck first in the second half, as Davenport threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Nick McLaughlin, but the Eagles did not let it get away from them, as Hasty scored from three yards out to take a 21-16 lead.

There were plenty of fireworks in the fourth quarter, starting with a 2-yard touchdown run by Demarcus Hall as Lakeview regained the lead at 22-21.

Hyels then threw a 33-yard scoring strike to Jonathan Williams and followed that up by hitting Smith on the two-point conversion to give the Eagles a 29-22 lead.

Davenport scored on a quarterback sneak for Lakeview to tie the game at 29-29, but Hyles countered with a touchdown run of his own that proved to be the difference in the victory and a return to the playoffs.
