There were a couple of different scenarios where Sachse could make the playoffs.
However, the Mustangs were not willing to leave anything to chance.
After a small hiccup on the first play from scrimmage, Sachse seized its second consecutive playoff berth by overwhelming Sachse in a 56-21 victory on Friday at Williams Stadium.
The Mustangs (8-2 overall, 4-2 in 11-5A) set a school record for victories both in the regular season and during the district slate while ending the Rangers (2-8, 2-4) hopes of a postseason berth.
Sachse will take on undefeated Mesquite (10-0), the 12-5A champion, in a Class 5A Division I bi-district playoff game on Friday at Wildcat-Ram Stadium in Richardson.
The Mustangs wanted to get off to a fast start, but that did not happen, as backup quarterback Juwan Saddler threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Branson Ball to give Naaman Forest a 7-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game.
Sachse did not let those ideas of an upset hang around for long.
Devin Ozigbo scored on a 23-yard touchdown run to tie the game and Kent Myers followed with an 8-yard scoring run to give them a 14-7 lead. The Mustangs were not done in the first quarter, as Marcus Hubbard returned a blocked punt for a touchdown that made it 21-7.
Sachse poured it on in the second quarter, scoring four more times.
Myers threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to James Mayden and then had a short scoring run to extend the advantage to 35-7.
He then threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Austin Williams and tacked on an 11-yard scoring run to make it 49- at halftime.
Sachse tacked on one additional score early in the third quarter when Gavin Burl scored on a 3-yard touchdown run.
Naaman Forest did score twice in the final minutes, but by that point in time, its hopes of a playoff berth had long since been dashed.
