Frisco ISD superintendent search nearing end

Published: Thursday, November 15, 2012 4:45 PM CST
Frisco ISD's search for a new superintendent to replace the retiring Rick Reedy is preparing to come to an end.

The school district interviewed five finalists for the position Tuesday and Wednesday, and a special meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday in which the district's board of trustees will "consider an act on naming" Reedy's replacement.

According to Renée Ehmke, president of the board of trustees, the applicant pool was filled with numerous qualified candidates.

"We know we can't replace Rick Reedy, but we can find the best leader for Frisco ISD," she said.

The trustees have released a list of qualities they're looking for in a superintendent. According to those qualities, the next superintendent will be someone who is a good communicator, either has a doctorate or is working toward one, has an expertise in networking and building relationships, and embraces a "small school philosophy."

According to the trustees' profile of their ideal candidate, the new superintendent "will be a servant leader who inspires others to join in exciting, innovative work to positively impact the lives of children and the community, as a whole."

While only five candidates were interviewed, about 20 people applied for the position, and a new superintendent could be named as early as Monday. The applicant pool included both internal and external candidates, Ehmke said.

"The hope is that after we finish the interview process, we will be able to announce a lone finalist at a specially called board meeting Monday morning," she said. "That will be the only agenda item [for that meeting]."

Because there is a 21-day waiting period before a contract can be approved after a candidate is named, the contract wouldn't be formally offered to Reedy's replacement until Dec. 12 at the earliest. He or she would then begin working on Jan. 7.

Last month, the board chose to use Plano-based N2Learning to facilitate its search. That firm has provided the school district with help in choosing the final candidates and guidance during the search process.

The two N2Learning partners who helped with the board's search, Danny Modisette and Keith Sockwell, have their own experience in secondary education administration. Modisette was a deputy superintendent at Plano ISD, and Sockwell was a superintendent at Northwest ISD.

"Since none of us on the board have any experience with hiring a new superintendent, N2Learning has been invaluable to us during this process," Ehmke said. "Both of these gentlemen, Danny Modisette and Keith Sockwell, have been in public school administration and understand exactly what the process needs to look like and be. They have brought us five excellent candidates and any one of the five could be our next superintendent successfully."

Ehmke stressed that the school district isn't choosing a new superintendent haphazardly. It simply has all its ducks lined up.

"Our timeline may seem fast to some, but Dr. Reedy has been very gracious to us in the length of time he is willing to stay after announcing his retirement, which prevented us from having to name an interim superintendent," she said. "So we are trying to be gracious and respectful to him and take care of the business at hand, which is finding his replacement."
