Loss of 2 students remembered at Cowboys-Jags game

Feelings were mixed Friday night as the Coppell High School football team handed the Flower Mound Jaguars a 27-18 defeat at the Jags homecoming game.
Thousands of Coppell fans were in the crowd, stomping, cheering, shouting. Hundreds wore blue shirts with “Logan 21” printed on them, remembering Jacob Logan, a Cowboy team captain whose body was found in Possum Kingdom Lake about 24 hours earlier. Several students had the number 21, Jacob's jersey number, printed on their faces.
Some of the students were wearing black shade stickers under their eyes with “J Lo,” standing for Jacob Logan, printed on them. The football players had No. 21 printed on their helmets.
Jacob's funeral was held Monday afternoon at Irving Bible Church. He had been active there as well as at Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell.
Just before the Flower Mound High School band was to play the national anthem, the announcer called for a moment of silence to remember Coppell High School's two losses.
Signs on the field expressed the feelings of both those on the field and in the stands:
“10 More to Go, do it for J-Lo,” “RIP J. B. and J.L.”
Jordan Logan, Jacob's sister, went onto the field in her brother's place for the coin toss. Flower Mound won the toss and received the kickoff, but all that was important was that Coppell won the game.
At halftime, the world champion Coppell High School Marching Band concluded its performance with an inspirational number to honor the two students who had died earlier in the week.
The Coppell Cowboys led by a narrow margin throughout the game. Toward the end, Flower Mound threatened to score to take the lead, but the Cowboys held on to win.
The tragedies of the week began on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 14, after Jacob jumped from a 36-foot-high ledge into Possum Kingdom Lake while attending a birthday party there.
Judi Pierce, Brazos River Authority public information officer, quoted witnesses as saying he surfaced once but went under again and never resurfaced. Divers searched for his body four days before finding his body Thursday night at the base of the lake where he jumped, under more than 65 feet of water.
The second tragedy of the week occurred on the afternoon of Oct. 16 when Carrollton police found the body of Blackwell at McInnish Park, just east of the Coppell city limits. A gun was found at the scene and police investigated the death as a suicide.
Concerning the search for Jacob, Pierce issued a statement expressing sympathy for the Logan family, and thanking all who participated in the search for the body.
