Quintet of gymnasts sign
Plano was represented in a wide variety of sports this week during National Signing Day and gymnastics was right near the top of the list in terms of numbers.
The city had five gymnasts sign.
Not surprisingly, three came from Plano-based Spring Creek Academy with Jessica Howe (California), Briley Casanova (Michigan) and Sophia Lee (Stanford) advancing to the next level.
Joining Howe at California will be Plano East’s Dana Ho.
Also signing this week, though holding her ceremony Friday night, was Plano West’s Casey Dreyer (San Jose State).
Mitchell up for Army P.O.Y.
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl has nominated 16 seniors for the 2013 U.S. Army Player of the Year Award and Prestonwood Christian Academy senior linebacker Mike Mitchell is one of those semifinalists.
The six finalists will be announced Nov. 28.
Mitchell is the lone semifinalist from Texas.
“U.S. Army All-American Bowl players possess a mental, emotional and physical strength like no other,” said John Myers, director of strategic communications for U.S. Army Marketing and Research Group. “And these 16 finalists have distinguished themselves even further through their on-field leadership.”
Winners of the award in the past decade include Adrian Peterson, Jimmy Clausen and Terrelle Pryor.
The U.S. Army Player of the Year will be given the Ken Hall Trophy during the awards dinner on Jan. 4 in San Antonio.
Winter Games of Texas near
For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state’s largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.
The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.
Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year’s event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).
While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion of the competition will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West (4051 Rosemeade Pkwy).
Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-August 4.

On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers.
Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night “Chalk Talk” and dinner with one of the state’s top offensive or defensive minds.
There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday.
The clinic’s registration fee is $70 if mailed in by Jan. 18 and $80 afterwards. To pre-register, visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.

The PGA Tour Superstore is located at 8700 Preston Road.
Landry Award nominations
For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area’s top high school football player with The Landry Award.
The honor recognizes the Metroplex’s top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.
Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.
Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012’s official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.
Missimo tabbed all-Big Ten
At Prestonwood Christian Academy, Cole Missimo was no stranger to achievements on the pitch.
That success has translated to Northwestern.
In his first season with the Wildcats, Missimo has been named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The former Lion played in all 19 matches this year, starting six in the midfield, and had the second-most minutes played on the team by a freshman.
Blalock seeking trip to Pro Bowl
Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Justin Blalock, a Plano East alum, has been an important component to the team’s 8-0 start.
Now, he is seeking a spot in the Pro Bowl.
Fans interested in supporting Blalock’s cause can go to: nfl.com/probowl/ballot.
Blalock is listed in the NFC sub-category under offense and guard. The names are in alphabetical order, so Blalock is near the top. Voting closes in less than three weeks, but fans can vote as often as they want until then.
O’Day named all-UAA
Case Western Reserve sophomore forward Patrick O’Day, a Plano Senior alum, has been named to the All-University Association men’s soccer team.
O’Day was an honorable mention pick.
The former Wildcat, last year’s UAA Co-Rookie of the Year, ranked second on Case Western this season with nine points on four goals and an assist. In two college seasons, O’Day has totaled 40 points on 15 goals and 10 assists. He is tied for seventh in team history in goals and ranks ninth in points.
Cowboys promote Bass
Plano West alum Ben Bass has been named to the active roster for the Dallas Cowboys.
The former Wolves standout and current Dallas defensive lineman was promoted to an official roster spot prior to Wednesday’s practice in the wake of defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman’s placement on injured reserve. Coleman required season-ending surgery Tuesday for a torn left triceps muscle suffered Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Bass, who played at Texas A&M after graduating from West, is now eyeing his potential NFL debut.
PCA, JPII players all-state
With the volleyball season complete, the end-of-year awards have started to pour in.
Prestonwood Christian Academy and John Paul II are among the honorees with both teams getting players onto the TAPPS 5A All-State Team.
The Lady Lions led the way following their trip to the state finals with senior Katie Staiger and junior Ashley Morgan both named first team all-state. Junior teammate Haley Wolken made the list as well, named as a second-team selection.
Joining Wolken on that squad was John Paul junior Jennifer Young, who helped the Lady Cardinals advance to regionals this season.
