Woo Pig Sooie: Adams inks letter of intent with Arkansas

For Centennial senior guard Mckenzie Adams, it wasn’t much of a question where to continue her career on the hardwood.
Adams, who moved from Arkansas to Frisco before her junior season, followed in her father’s footsteps and inked her letter of intent with the Razorbacks during a ceremony Wednesday morning at Centennial.
“I grew up always cheering for the Razorbacks,” Adams said. “I always thought I’d go there.”
“I know he was really excited about me going [to Arkansas],” Adams said. “He said he could dig up all of his old Razorbacks stuff.”
During her junior campaign with the Lady Titans, Adams averaged 19.6 points and 3.7 assists per game. Centennial head coach Wesley Charles said he expects even bigger things from his point guard in 2012.
“She’s a complete player,” he said. “She’s able to score but also able to get her teammates involved. She does whatever you ask her to do on the court.”
Adams stepped in during her first season at Centennial and led the Lady Titans to a playoff berth while becoming more comfortable with each game that passed.
“Everyone took me in right away,” she said. “This year I expect a lot more.”
The Lady Titans have tallied a 5-2 mark through the first seven games of the 2012 season. The team’s most recent win came Tuesday night, with Centennial defeating Lone Star 49-38 and Adams pouring in 26 points to lead all players in the game.
“In my 21 years of coaching, I’ve never coached a player with as much leadership as [Adams],” Charles said. “She lifts up every player on the team.”
After growing up in Arkansas and rooting for the Razorbacks her entire life, inking with her father’s alma mater never became more real than after a visit to Fayetteville where Adams got to meet the coaching staff there.
“All of the coaches made me feel like I was part of the family up there,” Adams said. “I knew I wanted to go there after that.”
Adams will play for Arkansas head coach Tom Collen, who begins his sixth season leading the team. The Razorbacks have been victorious in their only two games during the new season after going 24-9 one year ago.
“I think it’s a great fit for [Adams],” Charles said. “She’s from there and grew up there. I’m sure it felt like she was going home.”
With the signing process now complete, Adams can focus on her senior season at Centennial and joining Arkansas the following year.
“It’s so exciting,” Adams said. “All the pressure is off now and I can focus on basketball.”
Adams and the Lady Titans will be back in action tonight with a 6 p.m. home game against McKinney Boyd.
