Home stretch: Lady Lobos gear up for final matches
BY Chris O’Dell, codell@starlocalnews.com
The Lady Lobos went toe-to-toe with The Colony during Tuesday night’s home match and found little separation after two sets.
The two teams went back and forth in the opening set before the Lady Cougars prevailed for a 31-29 victory.
“It was just inconsistency throughout the whole night that hurt us,” said Kevin Kennedy, Little Elm head coach.
That’s when The Colony pulled away and earned a 25-20 win in the third set before taking the match on a 25-21 final set.
“We made too many mistakes at key times in the match,” Kennedy said. “You can’t do that if you want to win in this district.”
Senior Bria Gambrell led the Lady Lobos with a .285 hitting percentage to tally 16 kills and only four errors. The East Central University commit also racked up three blocks and two aces in the game.
“[Gambrell] has been key for us,” Kennedy said.
Despite Gambrell’s efforts, the Lady Lobos fell to 17-19 on the season and 2-10 against District 9-4A counterparts. With just two matches left in the season, Kennedy said he wants to see his team finish strong.
“The kids need to go out and compete,” he said. “They have played very well at home all year long, and I expect us to come out and play just as hard in these final two matches.”
The Lady Lobos will take on third-place Heritage (7-5) tonight before closing out the season Tuesday against first-place Centennial (11-1).
“Overall, the season has gone well,” Kennedy said. “We’ve been very competitive in all our matches and have accomplished some firsts for our program.”
Although Little Elm has already been eliminated from postseason contention, the Lady Lobos could finish anywhere from sixth to eighth place depending on the final two contests.
