Football: Cougars put clamps on Greenville offense

Published: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 4:42 PM CDT
The Colony's football team bounced back Friday from its season-opening loss as the Cougars responded to defeat Greenville in a non-district contest, 21-7.

The Colony head coach Rudy Rangel was particularly pleased with the defensive performance of the Cougars, which limited Greenville to 111 total yards of offense, much of which occurred late in the game against substitutes.

"It was a lot better," he said. "We controlled the game with our offense and opened the game with a 15-play drive where we really just nickeled and dimed them."

The Colony's offense was so dominant that Greenville ran just seven plays from scrimmage in the first half and 32 plays for the game.

"Our offensive line played much better and we got off to a much better start in general," Rangel said. "And on defense, our front seven was outstanding."

The Colony quarterback Troy Chandler had an effective day through the air, completing 7-of-9 passes for 70 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Albracht to get the Cougars on the board. Running back Bryan Hammond racked up 134 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, while Alec Gibbons chipped in 95 yards on 18 attempts.

"Gibbons is a special player," Rangel said. "We had a back get a little banged up last week so we called Alec up from junior varsity and he did a great job. And Troy had a great night throwing the ball as well."

The Colony continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts Woodrow Wilson.

"They're extremely explosive," Rangel said. "Their No. 1 receiver (Collin Spencer) is an absolute stud and we're going to have to try and slow him down. That's going to come down to keeping them off the field. But it's our Homecoming game and the kids should be pretty excited."
