Upper Echelon: Consecutive state trips cements Boyd's place as elite program

Their season may be over, but their accomplishments cannot be denied.
With its second consecutive trip to the state tournament, this year's McKinney Boyd volleyball team cemented its place as one of the state's elite teams.
"I'm pretty proud of the fight in this team," said Kelly Quinn, Boyd head coach. "Being able to say that you get there two years in a row is pretty memorable. There are roughly 250 teams in 5A and we kept getting down to the final four. That's pretty special."
"These girls have raised the standard," Quinn said. "I'm grateful for that. They knew what they were capable of. This season has taught me as a coach a lot of lessons from going through a lot of adversity early in the season to where we finished. It was a good year as the girls came together and became a strong team."
The Lady Broncos also garnered their fair share of District 10-5A honors, highlighted with senior Megan Mollett earning MVP honors and Quinn named Coach of the Year. Quinn, though, was quick to defer credit to her players and her coaching staff for this season's success.
"We've been able to compete at a high level for the last few years and I'm proud of that, proud of these girls and my great coaching staff," Quinn said. "As a coach you can't teach that. It comes from experience and you hope that it's taught from year to year."
In addition to Mollett's MVP honors, the Lady Broncos had three players in Krista Bukovek, Kaley Seaber, and Kelly Koop, all seniors, who earned first team honors. Quinn said the legacy these seniors leave behind is one of immense success and teamwork.
"That's what they've done, they've raised the bar for what McKinney Boyd volleyball is," Quinn said. "I've had Megan and Kaley on varsity for four years, and Krista for three years and the rest since their junior year. This senior group has accomplished a lot."
Boyd also had three girls earn second team honors in senior Emma Meyer, and juniors Lauren Petrison and Parker Shepherd. Quinn knows the future of Boyd volleyball now rests with the junior class.
"That is something I mentioned in the locker room after the last game," Quinn said. "For the juniors and sophomores in there to learn from what the seniors have done and continue on what they've built. You learn from them what it takes to be a premier program. Success breeds success."
Out of the nearly 40 wins the Lady Broncos earned this season, Quinn said the ones against two tough district rivals meant the most.
"The Plano West match in the quarterfinals was a good one," Quinn said. "The Plano match where we came from behind two sets was also special. Those two were tests of the strength of our program. Those two in particular stood out."
While she will miss her experienced and deeply accomplished senior class, Quinn is ready to see what this dynamic junior class has to offer, as they will write the next chapter in Boyd's increasingly impressive volleyball history.
"I'm really excited about this junior class," Quinn said. "It's a different mix of girls. They're a good group of kids and I'm excited to build on this class coming up and now that they have a taste for what it feels like to be at state, I know that they'll bring it to the sophomore and freshman class."
