Sunnyvale rallies late to knock off Van Alstyne in overtime
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
After a flawless first half of the season, Sunnyvale's dreams of a first-ever playoff appearance have taken a big hit in recent weeks.
The Raiders won their first five games of the season, including the district opener against Farmersville, but then dropped back-to-back games the last two weeks to fall behind in the postseason race.
It appeared as if the slump was going to continue on Friday when Sunnyvale fell into a big early hole, but with their backs against the wall, the Raiders rallied in the second half to force overtime and eventually prevailed in a 20-7 victory over Van Alstyne.
The Raiders had actually taken the early lead with a 40-yard field goal by Casey Crenshaw that gave them a 3-0 lead.
But Van Alstyne would control the remainder of the half.
Alex Cole had touchdown runs of 13 and 43 yards and Collin Fagan tacked on a field goal to give them a 17-3 lead at halftime.
The Sunnyvale comeback started in the third quarter, when Ryan Cottingame hit Cade Torres with an 18-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 17-10.
Cottingame has thrown for 1,555 yards this season, but is also effective with his legs, having rushed for 331 yards.
It was the latter skill that he relied on in the fourth quarter as he broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17-17 and send it to overtime.
The defenses held tight in the extra frame, but while the Raiders held Van Alstyne without a point, Crenshaw came through with a 41-yard field goal to lift them to a 20-17 victory.
After the bye this week, Sunnyvale will return to action next Friday with a huge game against Pottsboro.
