Environmentally fashionable: Annual event promotes KMB’s vision

For the past three years, Keep Mesquite Beautiful has presented a fashion show that showcases attire made completely of recycled materials. The show allows participants to create an outfit from the recyclables and to walk the runway and show off their designs.
“This event is our way to connect with the youth that are into fashion,” said Paige Swiney, executive director of Keep Mesquite Beautiful. “This event cultivates their interest in fashion as well as brings recycling to the center stage.”
This year, KMB will host the fourth annual show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Town East Mall, 2063 Town East Mall. The fashion show is open to all Mesquite ISD students as well as students from local colleges. This is the first year the fashion show will be held at the mall. In previous years the show took place at Poteet High School.
All entries in the show may contain only recyclable materials such as cardboard, steel/tin, recycled fabric or clothing, aluminum, plastics, paper cartons, chipboard, newspaper, mixed papers (magazines, junk mail, and catalogs), paper bags, and glass. If clothing is used it must be altered from its original state. New items like tape, glue and small embellishments may only be used in small amounts. Footwear, jewelry, purses and other accessories may be used to enhance the overall costume but the model must be able to safely walk across stage and up and down stairs.
“Anything that can have a second use is applicable for this fashion show,” Swiney said. “We like to see things that people don’t necessarily think about recycling.”
As an added event to the fashion show Keep Mesquite Beautiful has added another category for the students that are into recycling but not fashion. They are calling it trash transformed.
“This event allows students that aren’t into fashion to take part in the fashion show. They will design artwork or a working object out of recyclable materials,” Swiney said.
The designs will be judged and prizes will be awarded by age group – Kindergarten to fifth grade, middle school, high school and college. The prize for first place in an age group is $50 and the prize for second place is $25. There will also be one overall winner from both the fashion show and trash transformed event that will receive $100. The judges will determine the winners based on overall look, effort to make the outfit, environmental message conveyed by the outfit and creativity.
“This event helps keep Mesquite beautiful by reaching out with recycling into places where there isn’t a lot of recycling. At the mall there isn’t a lot of recycling and we would love to expand that,” Swiney said.
Keep Mesquite Beautiful designed the event as a way to promote recycling in a fun and creative way that gets students involved and raises the awareness in the community about the importance of recycling.
To participate in the event, visit the keep Mesquite beautiful website at www.cityofmesquite.com/kmb and download the application under the recycling fashion show tab. All applications must be submitted by Friday, Oct. 11. There is a minimum $1 donation required to enter the fashion show. The donation goes to support KMB’s efforts to beautify the city. The fashion show is also looking for sponsors to help offset the cost of producing the show. There are three sponsorship levels – title sponsor ($750), reception sponsor ($500) and green partner ($100). To become a sponsor, visit the Keep mesquite beautiful website, www.cityofmesquite.com/kmb, and download the sponsorship form for the fashion show.
“Being a sponsor helps pay for the event. The fashion show isn’t done for free. Bu being a sponsor it allows a business to get their name out there and to show that they support the community, its students and their efforts to become greener,” Swiney said.
