Cross country: Warding off the rest: Flower Mound runner takes first at the Assault of Eagle Mountain

Published: Saturday, September 15, 2012 1:30 AM CDT
Cross country programs from throughout the Metroplex descended upon Hurst last Saturday to compete in the Boswell Pioneer Trail Run at Tarrant County College.

But when all was said and done, it was pair of LISD programs that left their mark.

Of the 16 boys teams and 14 girls teams in the event, Hebron and Marcus combined for four top-three finishes, including taking first (41) and second (48), respectively, as a team in girls. In boys action, the Marauders placed second (55) with the Hawks in the third (93). Keller Timber Creek won the boys meet (42).

Individually, the Lady Marauders were paced by a first-place finish from Sydney Brown (17:58.44), who edged out Hebron's Alondra Hoyos (18:00.03). The two were well ahead of the rest of the field, which saw Rachel Jones (18:17.48) and Megan Montgomery (18:18.14) cross the line in third and fourth, respectively, for the Lady Hawks.

Rounding out the Lady Marauders' competitors were Payton Brown in eighth (18:53.59), Natalie Polei in 11th (19:11.81), Emily Jeacock in 12th (19:16.20), Hanna Bradley in 16th (19:33.33), Miciah Derenzo in 20th (19:44.62) and Devon Cruz in 25th (20:01.74). Also competing for the Lady Hawks were Stefani Doyle in 13th (19:24.37), Lauren Jones in 19th (19:43.79), Kendall Duke in 27th (20:07.26) and Lauren Halliday in 39th (20:35.23).

Denton Ryan's Cameron Jackson (15:05.30) took first in the boys competition and was followed by Marcus' Logan Hendrix in third (15:31.50) and Hebron's James Bodnar in fourth (15:50.10). The rest of Marcus' runners included Evan Durrill in sixth (15:54.50), Drew Guenther in 12th (16:17.10), Adam Steele in 14th (16:20.40), Josh Duffy in 20th (16:35.60), Benjamin Reed in 32nd (16:55.30) and Cameron Blackman in 33rd (16:56.60).

For Hebron, Andrew Clark crossed the line in 17th (16:24.80), with Jeff Henry in 22nd (16:41.20), Brad White in 24th (16:44.90), Chase Van Voorhis in 26th (16:46.40), Michael Summers in 29th (16:51.10) and Jordan Bertrand in 34th (17:01.90).

While Marcus and Hebron were competing in Saginaw, Flower Mound, Lewisville and Coppell were in Decatur for the Assault of Eagle Summit.

Wesley Ward (15:58.00) took the gold for the Jaguars, outpacing Justin Northwest's Zach Kirkland (16:12.00) and Coppell's Carson Vickroy (16:24.00). Flower Mound's Andrew McRae (16:33.00) and Drew Anderson (16:54.00) followed in fourth and sixth, with Nicholas Costanza in 14th (17:31.00), Derek Rogers in 18th (17:41.00) and Adam Tremonte in 56th (19:04.00) for the Jaguars.

Flower Mound (43) took first as a team with Coppell in third (79).

"It was a pretty difficult course," said Andrew Cook, Flower Mound head coach. "But most of our guys ran times comparable to what they ran last weekend at the Marcus meet. For our boys team, we're still working on doing a more consistent job of finishing and running as a pack. We were able to do that this weekend."

Cowboys completing the course were Clayton Hemphill in 10th (17:08.00), Shane Murray in 16th (17:36.00), Leo Fan in 24th (17:49.00), Josh Thomas in 26th (17:54.00), Mikey Gonzalez in 34th (18:04.00) and Anand Pant in 35th (18:04.00).

Lewisville took eighth (211) and featured Wesley Townsend in 28th (17:58.00), Andrew Cobos in 27th (18:38.00), Elias Barona in 50th (18:50.00), Brandon Long in 51st (18:53.00), Jonah Enriquez in 55th (19:03.00), Edwin Courtney in 59th (19:29.00) and Marco Mulato in 60th (19:31.00).

Flower Mound's girls, however, did not have enough competitors to field a full team.

"Some of our top girls were out taking tests or were out of town for certain reasons," Cook said. "So we sat them out for the meet and I thought it would be a good chance to give some of our junior varsity girls to compete in a varsity meet and they did a good job."

Despite not having its full varsity squad, the Lady Jaguar runners had success with Ashley Waterman in fifth (20:22.41), Allison Esposito in ninth (20:54.66), Martha Adams in 14th (21:27.28) and Alana Bitner in 16th (21:33.25).

Coppell, meanwhile, did have a full unit and took second as a team. The Cowgirls were paced by Jenna Hernandez in second (19:23.00), Alyssa Shelton in sixth (20:42.62), Stephanie Bilka in eighth (20:48.12), Alyssa Moino in 11th (21:05.71), Dabney Burch in 17th (21:39.75), Andrea Abel in 18th (21:45.78) and Gabrielle Olivas in 22nd (22:04.41).

Lewisville's girls featured Lindsey French in 10th (21:04.84), Susan Forbis in 20th (21:58.91), Abby Reinhart in 23rd (22:12.47), Anayeli Calixto in 26th (22:31.81), Kim Pina in 28th (22:38.41), Manijeh Rustomji in 47th (24:29.40) and Jessica Synder in 49th (24:55.00).
