For those looking to get over the food coma they've been induced in from Thanksgiving dinner, several new movies have been released.

November and December are typically months when award-worthy movies are released. With the Golden Globes set to take place Jan. 15 and the Academy Awards taking place Feb. 24, movie studios typically release movies expected to compete for awards late in the year.

One movie expected to receive numerous nominations is the Steven Spielberg-directed "Lincoln," which was released last week and tells the story of Abraham Lincoln's attempt to pass the 13th amendment. That movie is expected to compete for best picture, best director and best actor (for Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays the film's eponymous lead).

Ryan Noonan, director of public relations for AMC Theaters, said several films that have been released recently have seen a strong reaction from audiences.

"It's always a very fun time for us, and it's a great time to go to the movies because there's a lot of great titles that have come out the past few weeks," he said. "We're really excited about the holiday weekend."

Another picture that's receiving awards buzz is "Argo," directed by and starring Ben Affleck. "Argo" is the true story of six U.S. diplomats who were in hiding during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. The film is expected to contend for best picture as well as possible nominations for Affleck.

"Life of Pi," based on the best-selling book by Yann Martel, is also expected to be a contender for best picture and best director. The film, directed by previous Academy Award-winner Ang Lee, is about a boy who is the sole survivor of a ship wreck and lives on a lifeboat with a tiger and other animals.

"We have our 'AMC Best Picture Showcase' that we run every year in February, where every best picture nominee gets shown in our theaters around the country," Noonan said. "But right now's a great opportunity to see some of the competition."

Besides the award-contending movies, there are several movies currently in theaters that have or are expected to bring in large box office hauls.

"Skyfall," the latest James Bond movie, is already the highest-grossing film in franchise history. "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," the finale of the Twilight franchise, brought in more than $140 million last weekend in the United States, and is expected to finish its theatrical run with nearly $300 million and be one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Noonan said despite large crowds, AMC locations such as the one in Stonebriar Centre Mall are ready.

"It's typically a very busy weekend, but we're already geared up for it," he said. "We hope everybody comes out to see a movie."
