11-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sachse, Rowlett pick up wins in tournament play

Published: Monday, November 19, 2012 4:50 PM CST
It was a busy weekend for both Sachse and Rowlett and they each made some positive strides as the non-district season continued.

The Mustangs posted a 3-1 record at the Allen Lady Hoopfest, while the Eagles split four games at the Flower Mound Lady Jaguar Tournament.

Sachse (4-3) had a chance to complete a four-game sweep on Saturday but it fell just short in a 37-34 loss to Princeton. The game was close throughout and the defenses tightened in the fourth where they combined for only 10 points, but the Tigers were able to do just enough.

Lorian Benjamin led the Mustangs with 11 points, followed by Monica Dorsey with eight.

In its other game on Saturday, Sachse exploded late to post a 64-54 win over Sherman.

The Mustangs grabbed an early 15-9 lead only to have Sherman rally back to take a two-point advantage going to the fourth. It was all Sachse from there, though, as it ended the game on a 22-10 run.

Benjamin and Dorsey again led the way with 19 and 15 points, respectively, while Makayla Isler chipped in with eight.

On Friday, Sachse shook off a slow start to pull away for a 47-26 win over Little Elm. The Mustangs scored only five points in the opening quarter, but then used a 19-6 spurt in the second to take a commanding lead they would not relinquish.

In the tournament opener, Sachse got started on the right foot with a 54-42 victory over Lewisville. The Mustangs led 27-21 at halftime, but built that into a comfortable 45-30 cushion going to the fourth.

Dorsey and Courtney Blankenship each scored 12 points for Sachse while Moriah Reed was also in double figures with 10.

The Mustangs were scheduled to play Frisco Centennial this Tuesday and then after a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, will take on Lincoln on Tuesday.

Rowlett (3-3) finished up play at the Flower Mound tournament by splitting a pair of games on Saturday.

The Eagles used 18 points from Dominique Oliver and nine from Mersades Carter to post a 59-44 victory over Hebron. The game was close through three quarters before Rowlett put it away with a late 14-5 run.

The Eagles also suffered a 34-33 loss to Texarkana Liberty-Elyau on Saturday. The Eagles scored only two points in the second quarter and were down by six at halftime, but stormed back to take a 23-20 lead. However, Elyau had a comeback of its own and was able to eke out the one-point winn.

Oliver had 13 points and Lydia Williams added 10 to lead the way for Rowlett.

On Friday, the Eagles had a slow second and third quarter that led to a 47-40 loss to Cedar Hill. Rowlett had opened the tournament by getting 10 points from Harlie Greer and eight each from Courtney Fine, Taylee Alexander and Oliver in a 52-51 victory against Mesquite.

Rowlett was scheduled to play a road game at McKinney Boyd last Monday and then will host Plano West on Tuesday.
