In October, 20 elementary students attended DeLay Middle School's (DMS) Mini Cheer Camp and then showed off what they learned during a performance with the DMS cheerleaders during the eighth-grade football game at Goldsmith Stadium Oct. 10. But, this mini camp wasn't just about cheerleading it was about building leaders.
"The purpose of the mini camp is never about cheerleading," DMS cheer coach Brandy Williams said. "The mini camp's sole purpose and intent was to foster leadership for our current DeLay cheerleaders and build sportsmanship and confidence within our feeder pattern. We were able to accomplish both goals and much more."
The mini cheerleaders learned about cheering, being spirited, working as a team and believing in themselves, while DMS cheerleaders learned the value of patience, mentoring, relationship building and true leadership.
"All in all, we have built lasting friendships and bonds, while ensuring the importance of teamwork and self confidence," Williams said. "We changed lives."
