The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) will host the following events:

Published: Friday, October 12, 2012 12:56 PM CDT
* Open House at the Minor-Porter Log House-noon to 3 p.m., Oct. 20: View a spinning demonstration. Completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life, the log house gives visitors to LLELA a window on everyday life in Denton County in 1870. Interested visitors of all ages can arrive at any time during the open hours and tour at their own pace. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the structures and answer questions. There is no additional fee for this activity beyond regular admission to LLELA ($5/person; children age 5 years and under free).

* Take a night hike-7 p.m. Oct. 27: Join our trail guides as they lead a twilight/moonlight stroll down the Redbud Trail. We may hear some bumps in the night, but have no fear...it's probably just an armadillo. Howling coyotes, hooting owls and other nocturnal sounds will provide an out-of-the-ordinary hiking experience. No flashlights are necessary. Ages 5 years and up. Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu. The fee is $2 per hiker, in addition to LLELA's regular admission fee of $5/person.

* Campfire at the Cabin-6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 3: Join us for a short night hike to the Minor-Porter Log House, where a cozy campfire will be waiting for us. Children will enjoy stories, a craft, toasted marshmallows, and warm cider. Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu. The fee is $2 per person, in addition to LLELA's regular admission fee of $5/person.

* Spend the morning with the birds-7:30 a.m., Nov. 10: Bird watchers of all skill levels are welcome to join Keith Lockhart as he guides visitors to the best birding locations at LLELA. Ages 10 and up. There is a $2 program fee for the bird walk, in addition to the regular gate fee ($5/person). Reservations are requested, but not required; call 972-219-3930.

* Nature Walk-10 a.m., Nov. 10: Explore the Cicada Trail with a Texas Master Naturalist in this guided search for wildflowers, animal tracks and signs, and more. There is a $2 program fee, in addition to the regular gate fee ($5/person). All ages are welcome. Reservations are requested, but not required, at 972-219-3930.

The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area is 2,000 acres of prairies, forests, and wetlands managed as a wildlife preserve by a group of agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the University of North Texas, the city of Lewisville, Lewisville ISD, and Texas A & M Extension. Our mission is to preserve and restore our native ecosystems and to provide and promote environmental education and scientific research.

LLELA is open to the public every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for fishing, hiking, camping, bird watching, kayaking/canoeing, picnicking, and other outdoor activities.
