Showing off the past: Arts center exhibit focuses on city’s history

Published: Monday, November 19, 2012 8:30 AM CST
The city of Mesquite has been celebrating its birthday since the year began. Mesquite was incorporated 125 years ago. During the course of the year several activities and events were held to commemorate the anniversary. The Mesquite Arts Council worked with Historic Mesquite Inc. to plan a month and a half long artifact exhibit to close out the year. The exhibit runs through Dec. 31 at the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway Ave.

“The staff, along with Historic Mesquite Inc., went through the [Historic Mesquite Inc.] warehouse collection. We found all kinds of interesting stuff,” said Mike Templeton, arts center director. “It’s really a remarkable exhibit and we were really glad we could partner with [Historic Mesquite Inc.] to present it. It’s really a unique cultural experience.”

The goal of the exhibit is to present each decade of city as depicted with items such as a wedding dress from 1880, a silk crazy quilt from the 1900s and woodworking planes from the 1910’s.

“The things that were chosen are very capable of showing the history of the Mesquite,” Templeton said.

Templeton added that the gold-tipped shoes accompanying the wedding dress will draw the interest of shoe enthusiasts.

“The shoes are absolutely incredible,” Templeton said. “People that are into shoes will love them.”

MSO Concert

The Mesquite Symphony Orchestra continues its season on Nov. 17. The concert is part of the MASTERWORKS series that highlights music of the great composers of orchestral literature. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Mesquite Arts Center.

“The group presents approachable classical music. Their music has melody and are generally from the 1800s and 20th century,” Templeton said.

The concert will feature Christine Wu performing the Glazunov Violin Concerto. Wu, a 17-year-old violinist from Plano, began studying with Paul Landefeld at the age of 3 and has been a student of Jan Mark Sloman for the past 9 years. In 2010, Wu was the Texas state winner, South Central Division winner and a national finalist for the MTNA Junior String Performance Competition.

The MSO will perform Stravinsky’s Berceuse and Finale from his Firebird Ballet, Manuel de Falla’s Three Dances from the Three Cornered Hat and Ottorino Respighi’s mighty Roman Fountains. Entitled The St. Petersburg Connection, the concert contains music that has a connection with St. Petersburg in Russia.

Tickets will be available at the door for $12 adults and $6 students. Advance ticket packages are available by calling 972-216-8127. Tickets are also available the evening of the concert, beginning one hour before the performance.

Dashing Through the Snow

The Mesquite Arts Council and Black Box MAC Actors present the southern holiday comedy Dashing Through the Snow, written by playwrights Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten.

“We have done several of their plays. They have all been really funny in aslapstick humor kind of way,” Templeton said.

The play centers on the days leading up to Christmas, when guests at the Texas Snowflake Inn B&B go to extraordinary lengths to keep their yuletide plans on track. Unusual groups of characters play out their holiday wishes in this play with four separate scenes set at the Inn. The cast includes Dana Harrison, Sheila Rose, Laura Jennings, Suzy Dotson, Jocelyn Everett, Daniel Tiner, Robert Dullnig and Michael Speck. The show is directed by Byron Holder.

The play will be performed on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m., Dec. 1 at 1 p.m., Dec. 2 at 1 p.m., Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. and on Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available online at www.mesquiteartscenter.org , or by calling the box office at 972-216-6444.
