On the Run: MCA downs Rockwall Christian, 38-20
By Gary Jacobs, Special to the Courier-Gazette
McKinney Christian evened its season record with a 38-20 win over Rockwall Christian on Friday night.
MCA (3-3) opened scoring in the first quarter with a 14-yard touchdown rush by Connor Doyle. A missed point-after attempt made it 6-0, and Rockwall answered with a 66-yard scoring drive capped by an 11-yard scoring run by Daniel Rorie.
The missed conversion made it a tie game, 6-6. But not for long, as Doyle returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to Rockwall’s 6 yard line and then ran it in to score on the first play from scrimmage. Sky Walker’s successful conversion run made it 14-6 in MCA's favor.
In the second, Rockwall took the ball after a McKinney fumble and drove 41 yards to score when Rorie again took the ball in from 6 yards out. Another failed conversion made it 21-12 Mustangs to end first-half scoring.
But that fumble, and Rockwall’s ball-control offense, kept possession away from McKinney, slowing the Mustangs to only one touchdown over the next two quarters.
MCA’s next touchdown came in the third quarter on a 45-yard screen to Doyle following a drive-stopping fumble by the Warriors. Wysong was good on his third extra point of the night, bringing the Mustangs lead to 28-12.
Early in the fourth quarter, MCA picked up scoring again after recovering another Rockwall fumble at the Warriors' 42 yard line. The Mustangs drove the ball down the field and scored on a 3-yard run by freshman Montana Brock. It was 35-12 Mustangs after Wysong’s point after.
McKinney’s final score came after taking over on downs at Rockwall’s 30 yard line and driving to within range for Wysong’s 28-yard field goal. The Warriors weren’t finished, though, and scored as time expired on a 2-yard run by Rorie, whose pass to Jonas Poland on the conversion made the final 38-20.
Doyle had 135 yards rushing and 99 yards receiving while scoring three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs. Dallas Brock threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns for the Mustangs.
Rorie was a one-man show for the Warriors with 214 yards rushing and 24 passing to account for most of Rockwall's 239 yards of total offense. In addition, Rorie also scored all three of Rockwall's touchdowns. Rorie was all but unstoppable, but the three fumbles, which were capitalized on for touchdowns, sabotaged the Warriors efforts to keep the game close.
McKinney Christian begins district play next week against Colleyville’s Covenant Christian Academy at HEB stadium.
