Frisco Chamber of Commerce awards open for submissions, applications

Published: Thursday, December 6, 2012 4:14 PM CST
For one night, local business owners will trade in their hard work and dedication for a little glitz and glam when the Frisco Chamber of Commerce's 29th annual awards celebration takes place next month.

For now, however, the chamber accepting applications and submissions for the awards that will be presented that celebration.

The event, which is being presented by Brinkmann Ranch and First National Bank Southwest, was created to honor Frisco's top businesses and residents who use their time and abilities to enrich the city. There's plenty of awards to go around, as nine will be handed out -- six for businesses and three for individuals.

Anyone can submit an individual or business for an award, although a business has to be a chamber member and have submitted the necessary application to receive the honor. Businesses are judged on their success in their respective fields as well as their involvement in the community.

Finalists for the business awards will be announced Jan. 9, and the ceremony itself will be held on Jan. 18.

Tony Felker, the chamber's president and CEO, won the citizen of the year award in 2005. For him, the event is all about getting the community to come together.

"Frisco was a different place back when I won -- a lot smaller place -- but it was a great recognition," he said. "There are so many people that are deserving of this award, and like others I was honored to be considered worthy by the community. These awards allow us to recognize the businesses and people that make Frisco a better place."

Felker added that this year's event, which has a "Stars are Bright" film theme, will be more traditional while still making use of some of the changes last year's event implemented.

"We went a little unconventional last year compared to what we normally do for this ceremony, as we try to grow as an organization," he said. "We've listened to what everyone liked and didn't like, and this year we're going to have a fun, interactive event while also giving people a chance to network."

One of the aspects of the event's theme will be a red carpet where event goers can have their picture taken by the "paparazzi." There will also be spotlights and a movie theater-style marquee at the door.

The event will also feature live music and a silent auction while attendees eat their three-course meals.

Frisco Mayor Maher Maso, the ceremony's 2005 citizen of the year, said the event helps foster a community environment.

"As a previous citizen of the year, I was honored to have been chosen by them at one time," he said. "Anything that makes people feel good or makes companies feel appreciated is a good thing. The chamber takes time to support the community, and we're glad to support them -- they play a very important role working with businesses in the community."

Cliff Whisenhunt, president of First National Bank Southwest, which won the award for large business of the year in 2004, agreed with Maso's sentiments and said he's looking forward to a festive event.

"As a member of this community since 2000, we're honored to support the event, which showcases successful and committed businesses in Frisco," he said. "We just applied all those who will be finalists for their excellence in quality and service for all of Frisco."

Though the event is still more than a month away, tickets can already be purchased through the chamber's website or by calling 972-335-9522. Reservations must be made by Jan. 11. Tickets are $85 for members and $99 for non-members.
