Legacy Christian Academy used the combination of a stout defense and big plays on offense to overcome McKinney Christian Academy on Friday night, 17-10.

Currently ranked third in TAPPS Division III, the Eagles scored on a 63-yard screen pass to Ovie Urevbu in the fourth quarter to pull ahead for good. Up to that point, defense was the name of the game for both teams.

The game opened with a big play, though, by MCA’s Caleb Wysong who took the opening kickoff back 66 yards for a touchdown. Wysong then added the extra point to put the Mustangs ahead 7-0 only 18 seconds into the game.

After recovering a fumble and returning it to the McKinney Christian 28 yard line, the Eagles managed to move the ball to the 18 yard line. A tough defensive stand by the Mustang defense held the Eagles to a 25-yard field goal by Cameron Thrash, making the score 7-3.

Legacy Christian’s first big play opened second-quarter scoring when Adam Beck hit Bryan Marino on a 42-yard seam route for a touchdown to make it 10-7, Legacy. That’s where scoring stalled until the fourth quarter, as the defenses for both teams managed to hold each other to a stalemate.

Late in the third quarter, with LCA driving, McKinney’s Ben Bajema forced a fumble which the Mustangs recovered at their own 14 yard line. After changing ends of the field to start the fourth quarter, MCA managed their only successful offensive drive of the night. The Mustangs took the ball the length of the field and took advantage of the wind to score on a 24-yard field goal from Wysong to tie the game, 10-10.

After the ensuing kickoff, Legacy took over at their own 24 yard line. Blaine Billmyre’s 10-yard reception on a crucial third down and eight kept the Eagles' hopes alive. Those hopes were soon realized as Urevbu scored two plays later on the 63-yard winning touchdown.

Again, defense was a significant part of the game for both teams. Urevbu – who had over 1,500 yards rushing for the season coming in to the game – managed only 72 yards on the ground against the Mustangs. The Eagles had also been averaging 42 points per game, but they were hurt by three lost fumbles and an interception. McKinney Christian’s offense was also stymied for the second week in a row as they were again held without a touchdown and had only 74 yards total offense.

McKinney Christian (3-5 overall, 0-2 in district) will face the Gainesville State School next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at McKinney North High School. Legacy Christian plays again in two weeks against Covenant Christian from Colleyville at Fort Worth Christian High School.
