Quick fix: City offers free do-it-yourself plumbing repair class

Published: Monday, December 24, 2012 9:38 AM CST
According to city officials, the average home loses 14 percent of its water due to leaks. The city is hosting a do-it-yourself plumbing repair class at 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Rutherford Community Center, 900 Rutherford Drive. The goal of the class is to learn minor repairs to save water and lower your water bill.

“We have been in water conservation mode for a long time. If we can conserve more than our water supply can continue to be sustainable for a long time,” said Paige Swiney, executive director of Keep Mesquite Beautiful.

Among the topics that will be covered at the class are checking for leaky toilets, faucets and hose bibs, replacing toilet flappers, fixing leaky faucets, installing aerators and low-flow showerheads and other water conservation tips.

“This class helps people save some money,” Swiney said.

Charlie Brown from GWS Plumbing Services will be leading the informative demonstration. Attendees will receive free aerators and low-flow showerheads when they attend the class.

“He is a certified master plumber. He does plumbing workshops in Dallas and came to us highly recommended,” Swiney said.

The workshop is offered free of charge to Mesquite residents by the city of Mesquite and Keep Mesquite Beautiful to encourage water and energy conservation and sustainable living practices.

“The city is always trying to help the community. When we are able to provide things that can help them then it helps us achieve our ultimate goal,” Swiney said.

Although the class is free, pre-registration is required due to limited space. For information on the class or to register contact Kathy Fonville at 972-329-8300 or Paige Swiney at 972-329-8331.

The class is part of the city of Mesquite and Keep Mesquite Beautiful’s Sustainable Living Series. The next class on Feb. 9 will focus on green living. For information on upcoming classes visit www.cityofmesquite.com/utilities.

“We have several of these helpful classes coming up. It’s important for us to offer these types of resources to our community,” Swiney said. “It takes a lot of time and energy to learn things on your own. If we are able to educate people on something in a two hour class then its beneficial to them.”
