Boys basketball: Jags set scoring mark

Published: Saturday, December 15, 2012 12:01 AM CST
Flower Mound's boys basketball team scored more points than any squad in program history Friday and needed every one to top Denton in overtime, 84-82, during pool play at the Marauder Jaguar Classic.

The win completed a perfect run in pool and propelled the Jaguars into the finals, where they came up short Saturday against Dallas Madison, 71-61.

Flower Mound also picked up wins against Fort Worth Western Hills, Irving Nimitz and Southlake Carroll.

"The game against Denton was a great one," said Jason Fossett, Flower Mound head coach. "Denton came out on fire in the first half. They made about eight 3-pointers and it was a credit to our kids for fighting back. We got a stop at the end we needed and were able to force overtime."

The Jaguars were able to overcome an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter. In the extra frame, Flower Mound guard Ryan Reibly converted a pair of free throws in the final seconds for the game-winning points.

Jake Feickert scored a game-high 18 points, while Justin Gammill posted 17, Reibly had 16 and Brandon Langley chipped in 13.

"We did a little bit of everything and had a lot of guys contribute," Fossett said. "I think we made nine 3-pointers."

The team was unable to maintain the quality shooting against Madison, however.

"They were extremely athletic," Fossett said. "We were actually leading after the first quarter, 20-17, but we had a horrendous second quarter."

In the second, Madison held a 21-5 advantage.

"It was still a good weekend for us," Fossett added. "I'm proud of the effort we gave and I think we got better."

On Tuesday, Flower Mound topped Keller Fossil Ridge, 64-54.

"We played really well in the first half," Fossett said. "We were up, 42-29, but we really relaxed in the second half and had too many turnovers. We didn't shoot very well either, but we hung in there down the stretch and made some free throws to bail us out."

As a team, the Jaguars made 16-of-19 from the line.

Flower Mound continues at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Arlington Grace Prep.
