A major single-car accident occurred Monday morning on Custer Road that required the driver to be airlifted to a local hospital.

At about 5 a.m. Monday, a car that's believed to have been traveling northbound on the southbound lane of Custer Road struck a telephone pole at a high speed, said an individual who drove to the scene after hearing the wreck. The impact spun the car in the opposite direction, the individual added.

The accident was so severe that the vehicle's roof had to be cut off to rescue the driver and his passenger. Following their rescue, a CareFlite helicopter landed to take the driver to a local hospital.

McKinney fire and police officers responded to the accident. The identities of the driver and his passenger were not released.
