Sidekicks look to improve winning ways tonight

The Dallas Sidekicks continued their torrid return campaign Saturday by thumping the Texas Strikers on the road, 16-4, to keep their undefeated season intact at 6-0.

Just two weeks removed from a franchise-record 21 goals scored against Texas, the Sidekicks didn't relent any less in the teams' third meeting of the season. Racing out to a 9-2 advantage by halftime, Jamie Lovegrove scored four goals in the win including a hat trick in the first half.

Franck Mbemba added four goals of his own, while Carlos Videla (2), Michael Uremovich (2), Paolo Da Silva (2), Renato Pereira and Robert Luevano also scored in the win.

Top McKinney Sports Stories 2012 - (No. 5) That's more like it: Boyd softball team enjoying record success

Published: Friday, December 28, 2012 3:04 PM CST
(Editor's Note: The McKinney Boyd softball team claimed its first district title this spring. This included an undefeated run through the Lady Broncos' district schedule. The original article appeared on April 15.)

District 10-5A has been good to McKinney Boyd the past two years.

With a 7-0 win over Sachse on Friday, the Lady Broncos softball team became the latest of the school's athletic programs to land its first district title in that timeframe. Boyd cruised to the win behind opportunistic offense and the pitching of Erin Riding, who struck out 13 in the complete game shutout.

It was the final step in the progression of a program that went from a winless district campaign in 2010, to its first playoff appearance in 2011, to an undefeated run through 10-5A this season. The Lady Broncos will soon be riding into postseason play as a No. 1 seed after cruising through district without facing a challenge more significant than their own raised expectations.

It's a message that head coach Maureen Fritz, who has guided the Boyd softball team along each step of its three-year plan, has reiterated throughout the year. She came into the season predicting her team would dominate district, and so far they've more than lived up to her word.

"We're in such a different spot than we've been in the past, and it's nice to be here with the confidence we have," Fritz said. "It's like we expect to be there now."

With two games to go in district, the Lady Broncos are riding a 14-game winning streak in which their closest margin of victory was a 4-2 victory over Rowlett, the second place team in 10-5A, on Mar. 14. In the month since then, the Lady Broncos have won every game by at least five runs and allowed just four runs total.

That's quite the turnaround for a team two years removed from being on the other end of that equation.

With the youth the Lady Broncos have on their roster this season, there's reason to believe their newfound success will last. A bump to a more challenging district next year -- which will feature a pair of national softball powers in Plano Senior and Plano East -- will likely spell an end to the kind of gaudy run they're currently putting together, but the Lady Broncos expect to continue contending.

As for this year, Boyd isn't done setting new program records.

"We could be 14-0 and once again set a new record," Fritz said. "It's just that confidence and consistency that they're playing with."
