Football: Brewing up a win: Smith quarterback carves up Terrell on ground, through air

Published: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 4:42 PM CDT
Newman Smith's football team found the offensive balance it had been seeking Friday as the Trojans rolled past Terrell in a District 10-4A contest, 49-20.

The victory was a key bounce-back game for Smith (3-3, 1-2), who had suffered a loss last week in triple overtime against rival Creekview, 37-34.

"The kids were able to shrug off that loss and come out and play," said Paul Ressa, Smith head coach. "They really got after it and we were able to play a lot of guys and get some other kids healthy. The kids didn't try to do too much and saw the fruits of the labor we've been putting in."

Ressa was in particular pleased with the effort and production he saw from multiple first-time starters.

"We played a lot of new guys and had kids step up," he said. "We feel good about them and it's really going to help out with our depth."

Among the players stepping up were secondary members Walter Rickett and Dereon Hill, each of which are in their first seasons and also play basketball.

Outside linebacker Alec Rasmussen also contributed to the defensive effort with an interception, while the Trojans forced a fumble as well.

Offensively, Smith gained 466 total yards, including 270 rushing.

Andy Wordlaw sparked the offense with touchdown runs of 14 yards in the first quarter and 3 yards in the second quarter as the Trojans raced out to a 35-0 lead at halftime. Wordlaw finished with 77 total yards.

Quarterback Cole Brewer completed 8-of-14 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 145 yards on 14 carries with two scores. Ryan Huntley (one reception for 60 yards), Garrett Browne (three catches for 57 yards) and Marcus Sonnier (two grabs for 46 yards) each hauled in touchdown receptions.

"Brewer and Wordlaw had nice nights," Ressa said. "Andy showed great vision and was able to get away from the defense. And Cole has been making great decisions and is doing some really good things for us. He's a good operator and while he isn't going to flat out run away from guys, you can see he is really moving the chains for us."

Ressa also credited the offensive line, which graded out the highest it has this season.

Smith looks to improve get back to .500 in district at 7:30 p.m. Friday against North Forney (2-4, 1-2).

"They're a solid team," Ressa said. "They're a year removed from a nice playoff run in Class 3A and they're kind of transitioning under a new coach at the new level. But they're getting better and you can really see on film that they have some athletes that can get out in space and make plays."
