Track and field: Hebron claims first regional title

Published: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 4:29 PM CDT
At the District 8-5A Track and Field Championships April 12 from Marcus, Hebron's track and field team needed a big performance late from its 1,600-meter relay to claim the district title.

Saturday at the Region I Meet in Lubbock, the Hawks were faced with the same dilemma but again saw its relay teams come through as Hebron's boys 1,600 squad needed a fourth-place finish and got it to secure Hebron a share of its first-ever regional title.

Additionally, the Hawks advanced more individuals to state that in any other season.

"We did very well," said Jason Grennier, Hebron head coach. "It's the most people we have qualified and to win a regional title is a big deal for us. That's something that has never happened before and we're very proud.

"We needed a big finish from our 4x4 and our final leg caught [Plano East] right at the line. It was just like district, where we caught [Flower Mound], which was pretty crazy."

Grennier added he wasn't surprised his Hawks won the regional title, and he believes it is another notch on the belt of District 8-5A.

"This meet just continues to show how strong our district is," he said.

Hebron finished with 58 points, tied with Duncanville for first, while Mansfield Timberview (54), Plano East (53) and South Grand Prairie (33) rounded out the top five.

On the girls side, Timberview took first (93) and was followed by East (83.5), Duncanville (52), Mansfield Legacy (48) and Southlake Carroll (36).

The top two finishers in each event at each regional meet, as well as the top non-qualifying time from any region, advance to state, which is slated for May 11-12 in Austin.

In addition to its late charge in the relays, Hebron was powered by a pair of first-place finishers, including Robert Domanic in the 1,600 (4:16.19) and Kevyn Hoyos in the 3,200 (9:25.70). Hoyos also finished fourth in the 1,600 (4:18.99) with Domanic crossing in fifth in the 3,200 (9:49.83).

Kai Asberry excelled for Hebron as well, finishing second in the 110 hurdles (14.24) and second in the 300 hurdles (37.55) ahead of Flower Mound's Anthony Parisi (37.69), while Deatrich Wise took second in the shot put (53-02.00).

Carroll's Trevor Gilley will head to Austin after picking up silver in the 1,600 (4:16.31).

In the 1,600 relay, Hebron finished fourth (3:18.72) with Carroll in sixth (3:19.94), while Coppell took sixth in the 800 relay (1:28.83).

Lewisville's Malik Summers finished fifth in the 400 (49.67) as did Rodrick Williams in the discus (147-02), while Akheel Guy earned sixth in the long jump for the Farmers and Coppell's Chibuzor Osuji tied for fourth in the high jump (6-02.00).

On the girls side, Carroll's Courtney Krieghauser grabbed gold in the 1,600 (5:02.45), outpacing Hebron's Rachel Jones in second (5:05.97), Carroll's Felice Johnson in third (5:07.60) and Marcus' Sydney Brown in fifth (5:15.12).

Johnson flipped the script in the 3,200 by winning gold (11:04.29). Jones again settled for silver (11:10.86), with Flower Mound's Catalina Uriarte in fourth (11:33.23) and Carroll's Sarah Roe in fifth (11:49.82).

Coppell's Cassidy Pickrell is also heading to Austin after claiming silver in the girls high jump (5-05.00) behind North Crowley's Alexis Lewis (5-06.00), while Haley Cook just missed out after taking fourth in the pole vault for the Cowgirls.

In the girls 400, Carroll's Kami Mickens crossed the line in fourth (56.12), ahead of Coppell's Valerie Osamor in sixth (57.21) and Flower Mound's Elizabeth Osondu in seventh (57.24).

Flower Mound's Dephanie Adeyemi took second in the 200 (23.82) and third in the 100 (11.85), while Lewisville's Chausse Freeman placed third in the 300 hurdles (44.20).

The Lady Marauders and Lady Hawks also placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800 relay, while the Lady Dragons finished fifth in the 1,600 relay.

At the Class 4A Region II Meet from the University of Texas-Arlington, Creekview's girls finished second in the team standings (59) ahead of Newman Smith in fourth (36).

The Lady Mustangs were powered by multiple gold-medal performances, including Melissa Gonzalez in the 100 hurdles (14.17) and 300 hurdles (42.20) and Ngozi Nweke in the discus (133-7). Kasie Trigg, meanwhile, captured silver in the high jump (5-7) for Creekview, while the Lady Mustangs and Lady Trojans finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,600 relay.

The Colony will also be represented at state after Gerald Thomas placed second in the boys 400 (48.40) at the Class 4A Region I Meet in Abilene. Teammate Justin Mitchell placed fifth (50.09), while Benjamin Bibby (151-7) and Victor Bezak (147-8) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, for the Cougars in the discus.
